Default Cabin Filter

Just changed mine the other day, with 8440 miles on it.The new Purolator is much thicker with charcoal in the filter compared to the cheap flimsy factory one.

I changed mine last week with 6400 miles. The filter from NAPA looks like better quality for sure.

Was it available at the auto parts store or did you have to order one?

Access panel in engine compartment on right side firewall, just above the battery. Cover is held in place by three snap clips. Very easy change.

When I went in for my 45000 (5 years) service I asked the dealer to check the cabin filter. They said it wasn't dirty enough to replace. Since my dealer normally searches for every possible way to drag an extra buck out of you, that surprised me. It pretty obvious they either don't work very well or the air under the hood really isn't that dirty.

How did you decide it was time to change it?

Just pull it out and look at it. It looks like a miniature version of your furnace filter.

Yeah, I kinda figured that out. But if my money grubbing dealer didn't think it needed it after 5 years of daily driving I doubt it ever needs replacing. Just wondering why the OP thought it was so dirty it needed replacing after just 8000+ miles.

From the threads I've seen about this over the years, it seems to vary considerably from one part of the country to another. Mine get only just a little dirty after about 2-3 years (18K to 25K miles).

Joe, are you sure the tech even checked it ? Figuring my air on the south end of the metroplex isn't much different from yours ................ I've already changed the one out on the '11. I just prefer the charcoal element of the Purolator replacement.

That's not fair Jim. You live in God's country. Joe and I have to live with the Jerry Jones and Mark Cuban

Possible, but then they probably would have just said they replaced it and charged me for it. (The dealer went out of business shortly after this. ) Since I just traded in the old '05 for a '12 so it's a moot point for me. Something to think about in a year or two...
