Clay bar???????
So I am at the local cruise in last night.. just for a while.. good times..
young guy in his 20's is checking out the vette.. says "so......you detail you own car?" me: "yes, its a hobby, and because its black, its a full time hobby" (LOL). he says... "im a detailer..i own my own shop... if you know anyone that wants a detail job can I give you my card and you send them my way"...."and by the way, nice job, this thing is flawless"....
me: "sure".
him: "so, if you don't mind me asking, what did you use to do this?"
(boy did he open the box.......hahahahahahahahaha)
when i got to the part about claying, he said "claying.....whats that... "?
he didn't even know what a clay bar was....... it caught me off guard for sure. So i politely educated him.
He gave me on of his price sheets.... its just the basic stuff... he only charges 20 buck if you want a wax job.. he uses turtle wax liquid...
but now he's going to the zaino site to check out the products.....
nice kid... but he's a got a long ways to go if he wants to detail more than just moms' soccer vans........

I really dont understand why 99% of detail guys are hacks. If I was doing it for a living I would learn everything I could possibly learn.
Probably because it doesn't pay **** to actually do it the right way. Could you support yourself or family doing a 150-250 wax job that takes 8+hrs to do the right way? I sure as **** couldn't. Not to mention most people are happy with just your pull in and out quick car wash.

I could say that about roofing too but after 17 years I know its BS.
Sure it may suck the first 2 or 3 years until you get a quality customer base built up. If you live in a large city, they are people that will pay a higher price to have the best work done.
Car detailers don't make money off Corvettes. They make $350+ on detailing exotic cars. You need access to those cars to make the job profitable though.
Hey Wolfdog....off topic in this thread but have you ever tried Adam's Premium Car Care products??? If so how do you think they compare to the Zaino products????
Checked out a couple of big detailers in our area because I don't have enough time to give my baby the attention it deserves. No mention of clay bar for their "premium" jobs. I guess I'll have to wait for retirement for that Wolfdogs shine.
actually, all things considered, I think he's better off doing just the vans and such. the other owners are too particular and for the time spent, he'd have to charge a whole lot more which puts the spectrum of clients at the top of the pyramid. and smaller.

I have a friend who is 92 years old and still drives. (She's actually still pretty good.) She and her husband got a new car several years ago a few months before he died. They were so proud of it so you know it still has a lot of sentimental value. I detail it for her once a year. When I got there I found she had just had the dealer do the periodic maintenance and they had detailed it free. They did a wash and wax and coated the tires and... This was going to be easy this year. It looked brand new before I started. Just wash it and slap a coat of Rejex on it and it would be good for another year. I washed it and dried it and then ran my hand across it to be sure it was clean. Ssssss, Sssssss. ARGH!!! That should be ____, _____. 7 hours later the car looked almost the same but I knew the difference. There are many levels of detailing and you can't always tell the difference by just looking at the car.
Not that unusual I have talked to a few people who do a bit of what they call detailing on the side. They also never heard of claybar, or Zaino, or Rejex and some of the top tier waxes.
They wash your car, put some wax on it, vacuum the interior, use some shiny stuff for the dash and they have a happy customer. Because most if not all of their customers also never heard of claybar, poilish, wax, sealant, etc.
Their car looks good when they pick it up and they are smiling all the way home.
