Default running hot

My 06 has started to run hot. Not all the time. It happened last week and today. Around town, the temp shoots up to 240, then fan cools it down to 225 - 230 and then it goes right back up. Once I hit the freeway, the temp drops down to normal (just under 220). The problem will then go away for days. In the old days, I would think it was air in the system, but I thought the c6 is self burping. Since it is fine on the freeway, I'm guessing the water pump is fine. I'm not getting any codes and no coolant messages.

Any ideas?

Larry

Did you check your coolant level?

A 'sticking' thermostat will give you the symptoms you describe.

I did check the coolant last week and it was fine. Car is still hot today so I can't check it yet. It is a cold (62) rainy day in California so it isn't like it is crazy hot out.

I guess I can just replace the thermo and start with that.

Thanks,
Larry

Sounds to me like you have junk infront of your radiator.

I checked for blockage last week and it was clear. I'll pick up the thermo on the way home tonight and check again for blockage.

220 on the freeway doesn't sound normal. Mine never breaks 200 on the freeway, even on the hottest days.

A blockage problem wouldn't go away for days as the junk should remain there. I'm guessing the thermostat is going bad and sticking once in awhile.

I agree, 220 on the freeway is too hot, maybe a 160 stat would help.
Good Luck.
