Default service column lock

Ok so from what I see online this is only a problem with 2005 Manuals made in USA...

I have an issue where the dash is telling me "service column lock" and the car doesn't start... I pop the Column lock fuse and then it starts...

Is this only fixed at the dealer????

I know this was a problem with the C5 but I thought they took care of it in the C6 although, I never had a problem with my '01 and it was a manual.

It seems to happen to every 05 6spd owner eventually. Looks like the average life life of the column lock motor is about 7 years depending on the average temp of where you live and the voltage consistency of your car. Do a quick search and you will find many others who have the same problem. It runs about 1k to have the dealership fix it or there are some DIY tutorials on here if you are so inclined. GL and et me know if you have any other questions.

Ya i'm pretty handy and have done a few DIY projects.... but this one seems a little much......

Does the bad column lock drain the battery?

When the column lock on our C5 broke, the steering wheel would not turn. You may want to get it fixed before you need a tow.

Before you need a tow or worse. A friend of mine ignored the recall (?) notice on his 2005 and the column locked-up on the track. He crashed his car into a wall.

I'd take the car to the dealership and have it fixed ASAP.

I had column lock issues on my C5 and ended up buying some kind of resistor thingie that I plugged into the car somewhere that disabled the locking mechanism but told the computer that it was still there. Sorry that I can't remember more detail. Maybe searching the C5 forums would be more help.

The whole locking debacle ended up as a safety recall on the C5, but that probably won't help you out on the C6. Best of luck.

Lots of info on the C5 column lock bypass, like these:
http://97vette.com/howto/columnlock/index.html
http://www.mamotorworks.com/corvette?frame=1.3998

A C6 bypass was designed: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c6-t...ft-design.html

But IIRC, it is a far more difficult task on a C6 than a C5. And I don't think there's a kit with field-tested & proven instructions.

That is, if I had a 2005 C6 with SCL issues, I'd probably go the fix-it route rather than attempt a bypass.

My 1997 was an automatic and had the problem in 1999. I had to have it towed from my house to the dealership. No warning just locked up. Good news was that it was under warranty still.

that "thingie" was probally our colunm lock bypass.

We only make those for the c5. The problem with the '05 cant be fixed with our clb even if rewired to work on c6.

I have a '05 myself i wish there was a solid and permanent fix that was easy to do like our clb for c5's

I would hate to spend 1k at the dealer only to have this happen again.......

and the best part is this problem is all over the internet and GM does not offer a recall..... I wish it locks up on my when I drive, so I can sue them!!!!!

The bypass for the C5 is so simple.... The c6 is way more complicated......
