Default Rear Window TINT Thread

Hhhhooo-K

I'm gonna start this thread becasue i have seen a lot of 'beating around the bush' scattered about in a bunch of different threads when it comes to this subject.

1.) Why does EVERYONE's (almost) rear window tint pull away?
2.) What are some work arounds?
3.) Pics please of any that aren't pulling away and explain how it was applied

READY!!! GO!!!!!

After almost 6 years of Arizona heat and sunshine my rear window tint is fine. The car is garaged at home but it often sits exposed to the sunshine over the weekends. Both my rear hatch glass and side window tint is fine.

Never heard of it pulling away but as mentioned above the dots have to be covered with vinyl to give it a total blk look

Bill,

Did you do vinyl @ the top & around the bottom edge too? - Really looks good!

Thanks for sharing.

On my 2005 I have the tint installed in January 2005 and to this date no problems ditto for side windows too.
The worst disturbing problem I have if I remove top and drive without it my rearview mirror is useless it looks like a mirror.

Default Rear window tint

I was a window tinter for 15 years and this is a common problem on cars with the dot matrix. I boils down to a few things. First the tint is made to stick to glass and not the matrix. The white dots people are refering to in the tint actually pulling away from the glass and sticking to the dots which are actually raised up a little bit. In a nut shell the film cant bend from one dot the glass and back up the next dot the darker or thicker the film you pick. Having said that there are ways around this. The people who have posted they have no problems used a qualtiy tinter. In order for the film to stick properly you have to sand down the dots (usually with a wet red scrubbing pad or fine wet sand paper) this allows the dots to be smaller making the white dots lets apparent and gives the film something to grab. Black vinyl can be used to conver it up or even flat back sray paint. Or you can just tint the window and use a heat gun and slowly push the white dots out. This can also be done by parking it in the sun for while but usually doesnt get it all out but it will look better.

Hope this helped.

I have never had tint bubble or pull away over the last 16 years and 4 cars.

Cheap installation/materials/procedure I suppose.

My tint shop has always said that when picking up the car that I could use the windows immediately. They also bevel the top edge of the door windows.

I guessing that your guy did not use vinyl over the dots.

Awsome info I dont think that i am ready/willing to have the glass on a brand new car sanded but i am intrigued by the paint and probably the vinyl ideas. Thanks again

Haven't recieved the car yet. I take delivery sometime in late June/early July (build code 3300 right now!!!) I posted the thread in an effort to do all of the research on how to get it done correctly, the first time.
----------------------
Thanks all for all the info. Look for posts including "Blue Valkyrie" around the 4th o' July for pics of the 'completed' project.

Recap on what I learned -
1.) Use quality chit (tint/tinter)
2.) These dots are stupid!
3.) Have the dots sanded if necessary
4.) Vinyl & or painting work well

I hope you are kidding. Can not remember if New York has Tint Laws, but if you ever get stopped and get a repair order from your local State Police, you will have one hell of a time getting that off, and do not want to think about the mess it will make, at least with Tint it usually comes off in one piece. Plus you may damage the heat coils in the process.

Look for a shop that does a lot of higher end new car work, from dealerships, usually this is a good place to start your search.
