the pin that fell out closes a switch inside the windshield frame when in place. if the computer for the top does not see that switch closed when you first operate the top, it will not work. your top has complete diagnosis on the scan tool the dealer uses called a tech2. very expensive to buy and update. ask me how i know..................worked on them for years............. cranky
Just found this thread. Yes, without the pin in place, I do not beleive the switch to the top will work.
you guys may be right---can't remember the sequence but when I manually put the pin into the hole in the windshield and manually lowered the top onto the pin the top still did not work.
At least in my case the pin only seemed to help latch down that side of the top. There was still something fishy with the fuse but ....
it works now that's what matters to me and if pin comes out again I've got it covered.
If I remember tight it's the drivers side that has the switch the pin activates. I once thought mine had gone bad, but it turned out to be something else.

Someone else may chime in to give more info.
thanks-good info- I was not aware of that until one of the other members mentioned it..makes sense though.
Kudos for taking the time to do the photos. I've sub'd in case I need this info later. Those square pin-locks obviously hold better than a C-clip and good to know what all that looks like. Thanks ...
You might check the protective cover that snaps in place in the trunk. Don't know its real name but it separates the folded top from the trunk area - snaps over pins on both sides, just below the front of the trunk lip. There is a micro switch on one side and if the cover is not in place that switch will not allow the top to move - up or down.
Stuff lying in the trunk has bumped into the cover and unsnapped it in the past, keeping my top from moving up or down. Simple fix, worth a look. Good luck,
Hey drich2905...thanks a bunch for following through on the photos!
This is a unique problem and I really appreciate people posting details and pics when it comes to vert tops! I will be printing this one out as a PDF like I do so many other good troubleshooting posts here on CF.

you bet! glad to help. I am definitely a visual learner and have always appreciated the extra effort that some members go to in posting the DIY
photos. I enjoy doing some things on the car when I've got the photos.
Maybe this will help somebody else some day.
cheers

I found a simpler way to re-attach the bow pin. In the first picture (attached), you can see my arm reaching into the roof. From this access I could easily reach the top of the pin and snap the clip back in place. Although I had already removed the long bowed fabric retainer/trim piece, its removal is not necessary.
I was able to reattach the bow pin in about 15 minutes. The most time consuming part was finding the clip. I have attached a picture showing a red box where I found my clip. I re-shaped the pin with pliers so that it fit more snuggly before reinstalling. I also polished both pins as some build up had accumulated on the contact surfaces. The build up may have contributed to the pin popping out.
Access to pin with front of roof pointed straight upwards
Location of loose clip in my roof. The clip looks exactly like the ones to the left of the red box.
