From what I understand Dexos is a synthetic blend and not pure synthetic like Mobil 1 is. Mobil 1 is what came in my car Mobil 1 is what I use in my car.
My 2012 also has the Dexos label on the oil filler cap. I believe this is just a marketing ploy with two parts to generate income.
One, the oil suppliers must apply to GM to have their oil tested and "Dexos approved". They pay a fee for this - ie money to GM.
Two, the GM dealers are selling an oil that is only partially synthetic and call it Dexos. This is a money maker for GM as it is NOT Mobil One and they get it in bulk for less and still charge more.

Not going to get into this a whole lot but even Mobil1 is not a "pure" synthetic. This topic has been on this forum alone.
I would like to know why the oil cap on the engin say dexton and not Mobil one oil this is a 2012 grand sport
My 2012 GS convertible also has a Dexos label on the oil filler cap.
For what its worth, I just stocked up on Mobil 1 5W-30 and M1-113 oil filters at one of the mega stores. 5.1 qt jug and oil filter for $32.99
To meet the dexos spec, a synthetic blend will do, but using a full sythetic like Mobil1 is okay. Full synthetics like Mobil1 meet the dexos spec and is what I continue to use.
Just to be clear, DEXOS is an oil performance standard specified by GM for use in its cars, It is not an oil !! Any oil can be DEXOS rated if it meets this standard, and here's the important part.....The oil producer PAYS GM for the privilage of having the term DEXOS on its product !!!!
