Most everyone has seen pictures like this on the news about Phoenix area dust storms :
Well I personally have not been outside when these have hit us… until last Saturday. I met up with some friends at a gun show at the Cardinal Stadium some 40 miles from my house. When we all left the show and went our separate ways I saw something looming on the horizon that was in the general direction of where I was headed. Sign after overhead illuminated sign said: “High Winds, Blowing Dust, Limited Visibility” on my (fast) drive towards home. These iPhone pix were taken at the exit where I leave the 101 to get home 2 miles away. I made it into the garage with 2 minutes to spare before a “dirt out” swept over our house.
i remember these types of storms when we lived in Yuma
OMG
NASTY
takes like days to clean out after them
and DO NOT leave doors or windows open
last one we got stuck in me and my friend were out jetskiing in Fishers Landing
we refueled, hit the river, and right around the turn DARKNESS and ickey sand stuff
we couldn't see or do anything
it was like being pelted by a sand blaster
all we could do was hunker down under some downed tree limbs and ferns
the whole dessert was almost flooded that day
on the way home it was amazing to see though
we had the river to ourselves the rest of that afternoon
when we got into town, looked like a severe hurricane blew thru
Glad you got the vette home before you got sandblasted. Does much of the dust and dirt get into the garage even when the door is closed.
We get some blowing dust here in Tucson but never anything as bad as they get 100 miles away in Phoenix. I think it is because the Tucson valley is completely surrounded by mountains and they disrupt the straight wind flows.

When you guys have a good storm is Tucson, is when we get the haboobs. Large storms in the south create the winds tha move the dust. Since we do not have the moisture of south AZ, our dry conditions cause some amazing looking walls of dust. You guys are fortunate to get more rain which keeps the dust down.
Have to change the AC filters monthly in the house because they are tan with dust during the monsoon season.

The key word is ALMOST, we all know where almost counts
Long time ago, I made a point out of driving through a sand storm, the experience is impossible to imagine, beats driving through fog or snow storm, the sound of sand hitting your car is amazing. Of course, you have to drive a rental car to fully enjoy this experience as I did.
In '70 I was caught by a high-speed sandstorm just 8 miles outside of Palm Springs, CA in my '67 Firebird 400 vert. It sanded off the pass. side paint to bare metal in a couple of spots and ruined the rest that was remaining. The driver's side was perfect.

LMAO, this is exactly where I got caught, I was driving from San Bernardino/Victorville to Blythe/29 Palms if my memory serves me right
WOW, imagine what that would do to a supercar! Around here we have to worry about Hurricanes, but they are very few and far between. Glad you made it home in time ...

We are about 15 miles north of Phoenix and it seems that the dust storms stay on the south side.
