Default Balance weights

Does anyone know what can be used to remove the glue that holds the balance weights in place on the wheels. Had tires mounted and balanced today and there is a couple of spots where a gummy substance was left behind where the old weights were.

Acetone; Seen it at HD, Stuff will take off anything. Don't think it will hurt the wheel, but be careful.

I too would be interested in the best thing to use to remove the adhesive from "old" (i.e. factory installed) weights. While "I think" and "should" suggestions are great, I would love to hear from one person who can say "this is what to use, and how I did it, and it didn't remove the paint off the OEM wheels".

good way to put it. I would think "acetone," which has similar ingredients to nail polish remover, might/would damage paint.

I'm not near it now, but 3M (the "adhesives" company), makes a spray can of General Purpose Adhesive Remover. when I get back in the area, I'll give it a test on my wheels. (https://www.google.com/shopping/prod...ed=0CFoQ8wIwAg)

I HAVE used Goo Gone with good success. Takes a little time but won't hurt the paint on the wheel barrel.

I used "General Adhesive Remover" (in a red and white can) I found at O'Reilly's. Worked great and didn't do any damage to the wheel. I have used it for various other uses since and it works as advertised.

I don't have painted wheels, mine are chrome, but I used gasoline. Put a little on a rag and wipe. Takes a little time but comes off great.

Sure, I remove wheel weight adhesive almost monthly. I prefer Oop's brand adhesive remover (the more industrial kind) but it's getting hard to find. Any quality adhesive remover should work. After wetting the wheel weight adhesive with adhesive remover I often take a plastic chisel and do a little scraping (followed again with more adhesive remover on a rag). It comes off fairly easily.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I too didn't want to damage the wheels.

Be careful because several people have used methods that were too aggressive...and ended up removing the wheel paint along with the weights.

See THIS thread.

3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover does work but if there's still paper on top of the glue, you do have to wait 30 seconds to let it seep thru. then it can be removed rather easily. as said above, white and red spray can, also has big number on it "0897" or at least mine does.

Be careful with any scraping method other than your thumbnail.

I used 3M Adhesive Remover and a plastic putty knife. Took some work, I got a little silver paint on the rag which probably means the 3M took off a little paint but the wheels still look perfect.

Acetone will dull the barrell finish. Not advisable.

WD40 - definitely works and does not damage OEM finishes.

But - it takes some time and elbow grease.

(I would think 3M adhesive remove or Goo Gone would be faster - but as I read the other replies above - 3M may harm paint and no comment about Goo).
