I hope the "... I hear it every time you leave" comment wasn't a polite way of complaining. 
With your nice neighbor label I'm glad he was an enthusiast and not there to complain. It's always best to know and be on good terms with your neighbors.

I have to agree the "I hear it every time you leave" could be a polite way to bring it to your attention. Since he is a good neighbor you might want to walk over to his house and bring up the subject and ask him if it is bothering him. To show him that you care about your neighbors and that you will make a conscience effort to idle out and into the area.
