Default The Corvette Fun Facts Thread

We've all picked up a few oddball tidbits of Corvette information over the years. I thought it might be fun to start a thread to share some of these little gems. Just fun facts about Vettes. Some may be common knowledge for CF regulars, some may be obscure useless trivia. Maybe something you picked up from the factory tour, or the museum. Maybe just a general observation. Whatever. If you've got something, share it!

I'll go first. I learned this on this forum, but then confirmed during my buyer's tour:

When a Corvette wheel center cap is properly installed, the "point" at the bottom of the C6 crossflags logo should point to the valve stem.

The Right Way:

Wrong:

Wrong:

Wrong:

And while I didn't notice it, at one point it was wrong on my car (I don't recall fixing it, so perhaps they fixed it at a tire change or during my early on alignment):

Interesting.....lol...I went out to the garage to check mine....all 4 cap emblems are not pointed to the tire valve.
Anyway, a little Corvette trivia..... The new Corvette was ready for distinction very early on with dismal sales in 1954 (over a 1100 '54's on dealers lots when the '55 MY started.) It was Ford who saved the Chevrolet Corvette with it's introduction of the Ford Thunderbird for 1955. Chevy vs. Ford was very heavy in those days! No way was Ford going to get the edge on Chevrolet. If not for the Thunderbird...most likely the Corvette would have died at a very young age. Also....Zora Arkus Duntov helped tremendously to making a Corvette a true performance sports car!

BTW...The 2 seat Ford Thunderbirds outsold the Corvette by a huge margin.

Default Did you know.....

A Corvette is a warship! From Wikipedia:

A corvette (sometimes corvet) is a small, maneuverable, lightly armed warship, originally smaller than a frigate (2,000+ tons) and larger than a coastal patrol craft or fast attack craft (500 or fewer tons), although many recent designs resemble frigates in size and role. During the Age of Sail, corvettes were smaller than frigates and larger than sloops-of-war, usually with a single gun deck.

Although almost all modern navies use ships smaller than frigates for coastal duty, not all of them use the term corvette (via Middle French, from a Dutch word corf, a type of boat) or equivalent. The rank "corvette captain", equivalent in many navies to "lieutenant commander", derives from the name of this type of ship. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvette)

Also from Wikipedia:

Myron Scott is credited for naming the car after the type of small, maneuverable warship called a corvette. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Corvette)

**************************************** ************************************

Hee, hee: "Corvette Captain"....I can picture it now. White Vert with a little blue "captain's" hat! Winning!

This is from the C6 FAQ section Tips and tricks. The FAQ section is also a must read for any new owner. You can spend hours learning about your vette.

Default Another Fun Fact.....

If you lookup the GM Corvette Assembly plant in Google Maps, you'll see quite a large queue of 60th Aniversary 427's in the holding area:

Guess we are not exclusive to the C6. Did you know that according to the book "All Corvettes are Red", that when designing the trunk on the C5 vert, it had to be able to hold two sets of golf clubs.

Fun fact:

You can identify a 2010 GS from later year GS models by looking at the oil pressure gauge. The gauge max is 80psi and was changed in later years to 100psi. This may only be releveant to MN6 models.

Not true. My '13 GS MN6 has a 80psi gauge.

This is interesting:

While never offered to the public, a total of 43 - 1983 model Corvettes were built. There were so many quality problems with them it was decided to halt production until they could be corrected. By the time the problems were corrected, it was so late into the model year that the car was brought out as a 1984 model and was run for a year and a half. The only verifiable 1983 Corvette still known to exist is on display in the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky

Looks like the ZR1 and Z06 go to 100. Alas...my lowly GS only goes to 80:

Kinda reminded me of this obscure movie reference (I'm sure many of you will recognize this):

White is the only colour that has been offered on every year of production. Even the sole surviving 83 is white.

The C6 is the only generation the colour green was not offered.

If you look real close at the door sill, there are hundreds of Corvette cross flag logos that make up the tread pattern:

This is a close-up of one of the individual flags:
