I believe that both the aluminum or rubber ones are about the same thickness. I bought myself a low profile floor jack from Harbor Freight that rolls right under my aluminum puck without any problems. You can also place a short length of 2x4 under the tire and drive up onto it to give you a little more lift so that your floor jack will fit.

I have no problem getting my jack (not low profile) under with rubber pucks. A more important issue, IMHO, is how well they work. Both should normally work the same but a rubber puck is going to have less chance to slip if something pushes sideways on the car. The rubber one is also less likely to scratch the frame but that risk with aluminum pucks is minimal also. The rubber ones cost a lot less. I like rubber.

you can make your own and double up on the pucks. i made some for a PAIN in the A.. buddy with a new 427. he felt they were too close to the body so after 30 minutes of work i made him a set.
I have heard of PERMANENT pucks sold but haven't seen any myself yet. i figure they look like the Merc-Bmw units.
