When I purchased my 07 C6 in 2012 it had 7000 miles on it, and was in perfect condition, or so I thought. Since the purchase I have discovered several scratches in three differant locations which have been covered with touch up paint, If you have ever used touch up paint you know it leaves a raised blotch of paint along the scratch.
I believe I heard the proper way to fix theses sratches is to carefully sand the affected scractch after being touched up with the edge of sand paper smooth. Has any one heard if this, is there a better way short of repainting
Yes you can “repair” that by wet sanding the raised area down to flush to the original paint and then polishing to bring back the shine.
However, unless you know what you are doing you can do more harm than good. Wet sanding is not for beginners and you may end up spending money at a body shop to fix your mistake. If you don’t have experience with wet sanding I would strongly suggest leaving it alone. You will forget those scratches are there soon enough.
agree with the above.. well said... You could wet sand your heart out, next time you drive it "bang" goes the rock off the side, front wherever... enjoy your car, touch it up as it gets nicked, scraped etc.. I owned a black car that i dropped a ton of money in, 600hp stroker, repainted everything, more than once.. wouldn't drive it if there was anything more than 10% chance of rain lol. what an idiot..
owned that car for a year and a half and have had more fun in my 94k mile silver 08' C6 in ONE month... wax it polish it and enjoy it.. I wish i would have listened to EVERYONE ELSE before spending thousands and thousands on paint and disgust at getting "one swirl" in the paint.. silly
I 've just had both doors on my Tahoe keyed back and forth. It is a silver gray color which is pretty forgiving and it appears that it is not through the color layer. I'm going to try 2000 grit wet and block sand a few strokes diagonally across the scratch then polish and wax. If it doesn't work I'll pay the estimate of $350 to have it refinished.
If your mechanically inclined give it a try... just a couple of strokes with 2000 and lots of water. At the worst it will cost a couple of hundred to have it professonally repainted.
I found that Dr. Color Chip is the best paint touch up kit going. If you follow their instructions, you can cover up rock chips and even scratches to where they are almost unnoticeable.
I was taking my top off in the garage a few months back and had it slip and when I tried t grab it. the right side went up and hit the arm on the garage door pulley. It left a scratch through the paint a little over an inch long. I got the Dr. Color Chip kit out and after a few coats, it was real hard to even see. I know where it is, but I still have trouble find it.
Thanks for the comfirmation on sanding these fixes. I plan on taking it to a nearby body shop see if they would be willing to sand and polish these scratches. The scratches are like a pimple on your face you just can't ignore it
