Default Help

Hey guys. Just came out from the store and went to start the 06 Z06 and it turned over but wouldn't start. After about 5-6 sec of cranking I stopped it. Tried it again and it started hesitantly. Then I noticed my tachometer wasn't working, power steering feels non-existent, and it feels like it's missing on a cylinder/plug!?!? No check engine light has popped up yet. Any idea what the issue is?!?!?! I'm baffled. Thinking it has to be a sensor or computer but the power steering thing has me clueless. Belts are still on and turning. Car ran fine before I went in the store and it was in my sight the whole time so it wasn't anyone messing with it

After shutting the car off for a minute and restarting it was fine.....!?!? Any ideas what might be the culprit?

Good to hear from you Cowboy and sorry about your problem. When ever these kind of things happen the battery is the first thing to check. If your like me you may not drive it enough to keep it charged or maybe it's old. The only way to test it is with a load tester. The power steering problem probably has something to do with the engine not running right but who knows.

My partition and insulation kit I bought from your over eight years ago are holding up like new.

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the post Les. Always enjoy hearing from you buddy. Hopefully someone knows what computer or sensor it may be that affects the tachometer and starting. Maybe the ECM?

I agree it could very well be the car battery. How old is it? Do you do a lot of short trips? I can't speak to the PS and other issues but the PS should keep working as long as the engine is turning. If the engine is dying then, yes, the steering will start going in and out(or feel very heavy). I would run the tests and see if it's the battery.

I replaced the battery with a yellow top gel-cell about 7 months ago. I'll have it checked (and check the connections). It's not a garage queen but it isn't driven daily either. Thanks for the input guys. Really weird on the PS issue.... I'm guessing the poweer steering has some sort of electronic regulator and isn't controlled 100% by the belt drive??

Dan if the battery load-tests "OK", check if there're any code(s) set.
Might tell you straight-up what the issue is.

Since the car's working fine, now?
Wondering if this wasn't just one of the C6's many electronic goblins which disappear as fast as they manifest. :confused2"

GL, keep us posted if you find the culprit.
Hope it was an intermittent one time & gone issue.

Thanks. So far so good. Maybe it was a one time bad signal or something set everything off. Runs like a champ as usual now. Going to check all my grounds and plug connections for good contact and corrosion tomorrow - as well as the battery. No codes showing so that's all I can do. I just have never been able to ignore things because I can't justify to myself having to deal with a problem later (usually in a worse time or place) that I could have fixed when I was first aware of it.

You gotta love the C5 and C6. For being so quick and good on MPGs they are so reliable if you take care of them.

even though the MIL is not on there maybe some trouble codes stored. Put a scanner onit and see what comes up. My guess is TPS or CMS.

I had a similar issue when I had my 05.Turned it off, started it 2 seconds later and it was doing what yours was..shut it off again, waited and it was fine after that.I did nothing because it never did it again. So,until it breaks again,do nothing. And yea, good to see you back on here.

Turns out it's the crankshaft position sensor. Going bad.... Anyone have one for sale?

Thanks Don! The auto store had an AC delco sensor. I guess I'll have to read those threads and try to figure out what's involved tonight. I'm glad your partition is still working for you. I've had the same one in 4 C6's now and love it myself (even though I may be preferential)

Off subject, while I was waiting for the engine to cool off......
I'm ordering a new steering wheel so I decided to see how the old one looked in carbon fiber for the heck of it

Ok. I took a look from up top and couldn't see the sensor. Took a look from below and you can just see it through the space between the starter and the block. It's impossible to get at without taking the starter loose. I have a high-torque starter (for the high compression heads) and couldn't get the starter out without removing the long tube header so I took the two bolts loose and moved it enough to get in there and break the 10mm bolt loose with a ratcheting closed end wrench. It wasn't too bad getting it out but getting the bolt back in with the new sensor was a big time-consuming pain!!! Got it back in eventually and plugged the harness in. Bolted the starter back up and did a quick oil change while
I was there. So far starts right up and no issues at all.

Thanks for the help guys. Hope this helps someone else down the line. Simple fix for a simple problem i- if you know what to look for!

Glad this worked out for you. After seven years of ownership I'm still lovin' on your cabin insulation kit!
