I have the Battery Tender Plus hooked up to my battery. The red light is supposed to come on when it is charging. The green light is supposed to blink if the battery is more than 80% charged and be solid when charged.
I just went out to look at a few things. (Green was solid when I started) I had the passenger door open for about one minute then the driver door open about one minute. I looked at the tender and the red light is solid. No blinking green. The battery shouldn't have lost 20% of its charge in two minutes of the door being open. The battery is about 6 months old.

I don't use a BTP, have another brand; BUT, while hooked-up I've opened the door to retrieve something and when finished locked it back up.
Luckily I re-checked the unit. Red lamp was flashing indicating a default. Disconnecting & reconnecting reset unit & all's fine. My unit, for some reason, faults out when car power's activated with this unit.
Had I assumed it was fine I'd have been SOL.
IF you haven't done so already, disconnect the unit & reconnect it just to be safe. Lamps *should* be normal.

Totally normal if it turns green again in an hour or so. If longer than that, start 2nd guessing the battery or the hook up.
I had a new Yellow Top that went bad, and the slightest draw (door open, or inputting NAV directions), the battery drain was really quick, and the Plus would take a long time to get back to green.
The battery had a bad cell and it was less than 1 year old.
The Battery Tender, and just about all of the 'float' chargers, don't produce a lot of current. When you start opening doors and turning on those inside lights, they will easily draw more current than can be supplied, cycling through its stages. In Other words, the responses you see from the BT are normal.
What I look for in battery tenders is the float voltage, I like to see it around 13.2vdc.
One item will help is the switch to LED's, but really isn't needed, I've brought back some pretty flat batteries using just a BT.
