C5 or C6
Thats the first year for the LS3, and hp went from 400 to 430,(436 with npp dual mode exhaust option).
The 2008 is sort of a key year in which lots of things were changed for the better.
I picked up a 2008, 3LT optioned C6, A6, 436hp Coupe. Paddle shift, rev matches on downshift. The car is qwik. mid 12's bone stock, high 11 second ets with a cai, headers and a dyno tune,(total for those upgrades=$1,900 approx).
PS. I bought the 2008 in 2012, 34,500 miles on it, got an extended warranty for 6 more years/72,000 miles.
With extended warranty the car was $35,500 in 2012. Im sure they are a few thousand less now 2 years later.
It was the best $36k I have ever spent for a loaded car, (GPS/NAV, Headsup, Heated Seats, Auto Dimming Mirror, Tilt/Telescoping Wheel, Twilight Sentinel, etc., etc.)
Gotta have those heated seat here in southern florida.
2008 forward would be the place to look if you can manage the additional cost.

So I think I'd go with a C6, and like Steve said, go for at least a 2008 model year.

Except you can hit 11's w/o headers
