What's the best way to clean the dirt out of wheels from outside can't get hands thru spokes to clean back inside wheels where brake dust and road grime is.
Try Wheel Woolies, available from AutoGeek. They're basically oversized wool Q-tips. You'll be able to get between the spokes to clean your barrels. However, I would suggest that if your wheels are REALLY dirty, you might want to remove them, clean them, and get a protective coating on there (e.g. Rejex, etc). They'll be much easier to clean going forward.
I did pull the wheels off and cleaned the inside good the first time. Now every month or two when I wash the car I use this and it keeps the insides looking good.

I have this. I have both sizes and they work great. There are a few other brushes out there that do the same thing.
Skinny Long Brush and Grease Cutting Soap. I also use Mequires All Wheel and tire cleaner as it does not stain anything ans seems to help with brake dust removal. My current brush could be better but it works and the whole deal takes about 10 minites a wheel plus drying after I wash the car as I do the wheels first.
Usually once a year I take the wheels off and give them a good cleaning. While they are off I also apply a coat of wax to the barrels. After that just a good blast with a garden hose.
I made these barrel cleaning devices by slicing a sponge and gluing it to the end of a large paint stir stick which I get for free at Home Depot. Works great and almost cleans the entire barrel.
