My wife drove the C6 because her vehicle was in the shop. After a short all trip, she couldn't get back into the car. Thinking her fob's battery was shot, I came to the rescue but mine didn't work either; nothing. I got into the trunk with the key and used the manual door release. The battery seems completely dead. I jumped started the car and got it home. The drive wasn't more than five miles. Now, all seems fine and the battery appears normal. The battery is five years old so that's in question, but has anyone experienced something similar to this?

Your battery is likely on borrowed time. I would replace it, 5 years is a pretty good run with these cars.

Yep, 5 years is a long time for a battery. Usually 2-3 is when the battery should be replaced.

Thanks for the quick replies - I will replace it as I tend to keep things until their last breath. I hope the fix is that simple!

Although likely the battery, make sure the cables are tight. Sometimes, things just loosen up...aka sh*t happens.

Btw OP, what part of St. Louis? I used to live in Florissant.

Replaced after 2 or 3 years? Can I have your old ones? Good batteries will have a free replacement warranty out to 3 years and then pro-rated to 60 months.

The original battery in our '05 Corvette was replaced in 2012. With GM batteries, I've always gotten a 7-9 year life span in my everyday vehicles. Then again, most of our driving is highway and the battery is probably always fully charged. With our car, the manual says to park our stick shift car in reverse. Something to do with it shutting all the electrical stuff down. I've had no electrical issues myself. If a $150 battery doesn't last longer than five years, I'd be checking my electrical system out or getting a different brand of battery.

Battery life is going to vary for individuals. My recent replacement was after just shy of 3 years. My cars fine, it has to do with how I use it. It's my daily driver, i make several trips a day and most of my trips are short - I often have to extend them an extra few minutes to make sure the engine gets up to temp regularly. I don't use a tender because it wouldn't be worth the hassle. Before the Vette, my previous car's battery lasted about the same.

Wow, good for you! I wish I could say the same about my '05. I think 3 years was the best I got before the car started acting weird. I don't think there was a single week that it didn't get driven. But this begs the question: Did you keep yours on a tender?

From the looks of it, my battery was the original AC Delco when I bought the car on 12/14/12 (it's an '07). A couple months later, time for a new one. You have to remember that hi-perf. vehicles eat up batteries faster than say, a Honda Accord. We use them less, and they're usually doing more while in use. Even when not in use, the car is monitoring, calculating, remembering, which means draw.

Battery life depends entirely on how the owner treats it. Keep it fully charged 24/7/365 and it will easily last 10 years. I've seen commercial batteries that are almost identical to the one GM give you that are 20 years old and still doing fine in monthly tests. On the other hand I've seen batteries that are allowed to completely discharge just a few times and are shot in less than a year. Whenever a lead acid battery supplies current it is losing life. The farther down the discharge goes the faster life is lost.

OP, since you have now had at least one unexpected full discharge on a 5 year old battery it is time to replace it. It was bad before she started her trip and it is worse now.

When I bought my 07 new it was inside the Dealer's showroom with a dead battery. I asked for a new one but they said charge it first and if it gives you problems buy a new one and they would refund my money. Did as they asked and it died within 2 weeks. They did refund my money. New battery lasted less than a year (daily driver). Replaced with a Optima Red Top and it has been fine since.

Our cars are very sensitive to voltage drop and weird things happen with a weak battery or failing Alt.

Perhaps I've just been incredibly lucky all my life, or my preventative maintenance, really pays off.

I always replace a car battery one year before it's rated life. A 5 year battery is replaced in 4 years.

I buy new tires when the tread is down to about 3/32, sometimes 4/32 with an 11/32 new tire.

I change oil at 2,500 miles for standard oil, and 6,000 for synthetic.

My refrigerator gets new air and water filters every 5 months instead of the 6 to 8 that's recommended.

I've been driving many makes, models, and types of vehicles since I was 16 years old.
That's 54 years. Owned countless appliances, lawn mowers, etc.

I can say with all honesty, that I have never had a major engine repair on any car.
Never had a battery die on me unexpectedly.
Never had a tire fail, and can count flats on one hand.
Every appliance, I've ever owned was replaced at 10 years, without incident, and still in working condition.

As a result I'm a huge believer in preventive maintenance.

Wow what country do you live in? I had a 97Z-28 that got 7 years out of the original battery. My 03 Vette got 6 1/2 years out of original battery. Th second one in the Vette was still going strong when I traded it for my 13 Vette. Most all good one are 72 months which is 6 years.

I'd suggest replacing the FOB batteries at this time too.

Same thing happened to me. All was working, then got stuck in shopping center.
Crawled in and jump start, got home and put it on the charger. All was good for a
few months. Then it happened again. Got new battery - from K-Mart by the way.
