Default Windsheild Chips

I was cleaning my windsheild and i counted 13 small chips. Only 16 months old with 14700 miles. I try not to follow to close. Never hear any thing hit the glass.

Pretty typical. They chip pretty easily. I'm on my third windshield on my 06 which I bought new. Stay away from the back of any 18 wheelers; the car is so low that most anything kicked up from the road will cause this to happen and the glass impact strength on these cars seems to be pretty low.

At 36K miles I have a half dozen noticeable chips but when driving into a low sun the whole thing is sand blasted. I mentioned this to the Safelite guy, saying they don't make 'em like they used to but he claims the contrary, that todays glass is better than it used to be. Hmmmmm.

Can't get around not getting chips because the car sits so low.

I just think of the windshield chips as evidence of enjoying the car.

Chips in the windshield, hood and top with only 13k. Got the first chip in the windshield with 100 miles on the odometer. The roads are pretty crappy here plus there are many off-road events that add to the problem. Doesn't help when you see all kinds of equipment in the back of pickup trucks without cover. Motorcycles are even more dangerous. Got hit in the hand once, no idea where the rock came from.

A few years ago I had my BMW in for service and the SA said that the "sandblast" effect was a danger in direct sunlight and recommended I have the windshield repalaced. Called my insurance and they (Farmers) said they would cover it less the $100 deductible. I mentioned that the Corvette was in worse shape and they said to have them both done. Check with your insurer.

I think most of us realize that the only way to avoid chips on the windshield or any other imperfections anywhere on the body is to leave it in the garage all the time.

I remember how frustrated I used to get the first few times I noticed little chips in the paint on the front end and windshield but after a while, it stopped bothering me. All I can do is the obvious...don't follow any vehicle too closely, be careful where I park, etc. etc. and don't expect to have a perfect car with perfect paint when and if you actually drive it beyond your driveway.

Second windshield on my '12. The first one had a crack and numerous chips after a trip to the SW. I never follow too close. New one has a fresh chip right in the line of sight. They are rock magnets for sure.

Follow the three second rule-stay back at least three seconds (unless preparing to pass) from the car in front which allows most rocks to fall low enough to the pavement not to bother hitting your windshield or front.

works great until you get passed lol.. before you know it you'd be driving in reverse..

I was involved in some "spirited" driving on a two lane hwy last week with couple friends (two C7's and an E63). unfortunately, I was pelted by one of the C7's (ARH LT's and Tune). as we were already travelling the speed limit he laid into it and i followed and well. i was following lol.. Of course "POW!!!" a pretty big rock made a "bullseye" chip in the glass .

It was repaired other day but you can still see it.. it's on the passenger side in the line of sight of anyone over there.

Glass guy said it was so big he's not certain it won't spread. If that happens has anyone went through corvette museum insurance to have a windshield replaced? I believe i have a zero deductible?

PS. i got the payback on that one C7 from the next stop light two car lengths out and couldn't make it up, that E63 was side by side with him as I saw from my rearview. The other C7 (Cam+LT's) took off in second and was on their bumpers lol..

Corvettes are wonderful machines..
Happy Easter!

My '03 was really terribly sandblasted, especially when going into the sun. So far, my '09 is not. And no chips in either car, thankfully.
