Sounds like quite a bit of excitement for a morning cruise. Close calls always shake you up a bit. But hopefully this will not stop you from enjoying the power of your Vette in the future.

I have yet to be "enticed" on the street maybe because those that would see the Z06 emblem on the fender and know that if I wanted I could hand their rear to them in a bag.
But I try really hard to practice "The biggest dog in the pack doesn't have to bark." I know what the car can do and I'm the only one I have to impress.

I applaud the OP for the wisdom shown after the incident and sharing. Hopefully this will ring a chord for somebody and save a life.

Can we assume the "Big Dog" does some barking on the track?

Hey Vance, I see you had an epiphany.
Just curious, what 'small town' were you passing through?

Had a similar experience w/ my Z06, lost it so fast there was NO time to correct & no way the nannies w/could keep-up with my boner.
I learned that day it isn't just where & when one decides to let it rip but how. Gotta roll into the power of a LS7, same holds true for your build.

Remember my telling you I had a chance to drive my pal's 800HP Ford GT while I was at a car show last year sponsored by his dealership?
There were 50 people clamoring for a chance to drive the car upon our return & he told 'em all, "I let this guy (me) drive my car because he knows HOW to drive a HP vehicle. None of you do."
Smart guy, 'Mark'.

So glad to know you posted an important lesson here -- w/o damage or injury to you/your beautiful car or anyone else -- for all to hear. "A wise man learns from his mistakes, a wiser man learns from other's mistakes."

Hope this won't affect our planned 'cultural exchange' planned for a future day.

Good story. My dad used to tell me that we're granted an unknown number of 'luck shots' when we're born to use over our lifetime. If so, sounds like you may have used one of yours. Glad it all came out okay for you.

Never do anything stupid without your front wheels being straight. Your ignorance really shows if you do.

Hey there Dan:

I was coming in the back roads (Peterson) into North Lake and heading towards home on Cty. VV. My tuner finalized some settings and I can't wait to do our swap Dan...I might even look good in Blue for once.... He told me I'm at about 600 HP at the crank now and I didn't know that.

I like your "A wise man learns from his mistakes, a wiser man learns from other's mistakes." I'm floored a bit that some comments on this thread actually are taking something away from my stupidity...and folks that does make me feel a bit better, so thanks! I really just wanted to share how easy it is for a reasonable person to get caught up in a real life moment and explain how much scarier it is than the video game!

I learned when I first got the car last October that if you just mash it and not bring the power on with a little touch the back end breaks loose quite easily. So with this SC now if I ever punch it my wheels are always facing straight ahead and at least moving along in 2nd gear...and even with the new skins on a good road it still wants to step out.

When I close my eyes and remember what it looked like when he was spinning out it was surreal, like slow motion! He punched it halfway through a 90 degree left hand turn...back end breaks loose going right...corrects it and it comes back left even harder! At that point I realized the dude is out of control and crosses into the guys yard. He had to do something not good to his front end...it was like watching NASCAR when they lose it and head into the infield and the splitter scoops and sprays sod all over!

Anyway...by connecting the dots the lesson was learned. You never know the skill level or what goes on in the mind of another driver...these Vettes are very unforgiving and powerful...and you don't need to play with fire when the other innocent public you share the road with could happen to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time...for what? A thrill? I luckily got up the next morning and looked in the mirror just to be reminded what the face of stupid looks like. I can't imagine what a person must feel like when they kill someone innocent with an OWI...or playing stupid like I did...how do you live with that on your conscience...

Thanks for the read....and replies.

I'm glad neither of you were injured. I hope the other driver offers to assist in the repair of the yard or pay for any damages. Hopefully he's going to be a little more careful at least for a few months.

New Vette owner here. My last two higher HP cars were a FWD (286 hp) and an AWD (300 hp). So this is the first high HP car I've driven with rear wheel drive. Fortunately I have thousands of hours of virtual driving experience on my PS3 and computer. That and two driving schools, one of which was Team Continental's High Performance Driving School taught at Portland International raceway.

I'll be signing up for another one this summer so I can get to know the car at the limits (make that, near the limit ).

I have a couple friends that have been to club track days with their Corvette's and both have experienced near disasters. One was getting better at exiting a turn onto the long slightly curved straight. He carried more speed into the end of the straight (by 7 mph) than his previous laps were doing. And he didn't change his braking point. He ended up off track in the grass. Only his pride was wounded and the car needed a thorough cleaning.

The other friend was on the same slightly curved straight that is off camber if you're on the outer width of the track (where passing is done). I don't think he was near another car but was probably staying in the "fast" lane and lost control under acceleration and spun at over 100 mph. No damage to anything but pride and extra wear on the tires.

So far I've only used the throttle smoothly and the aids are never off. I have yet to see the dash light up as the aids become activate if I've over done something. I have seen the aids in my other cars come on when the wheels slip. Turned them off on the track day in the Audi (300 hp AWD).

I'm surprised at how easy it is to control on a daily basis. This is also the first high HP manual I've driven since driving a Lotus Turbo Esprit and a Porsche 928S. Both of which were fast, but didn't have the torque of the Corvette.

I think it's safe to say that these temptations hit all of us from time to time and fortunately most of us realize that there nothing to be gained from street racing. If putting your own life in jeopardy is not enough, what about an innocent walker, biker or car with a family coming the other way. What a tragedy for all involved. Since owning my Vette, I have a great respect for its speed and capabilities and can easily shrug off some idiot that has nothing to lose but to race me. Like you, I too have XM radio and between listening to my favorite tunes and hearing the sweet tune of my Vette's exhaust, that's enough for me! I'm glad nothing happened to you and I'm sure your family and friends would agree. Take care!
