There can be several causes, and most of them have the potential for a big problem. Some are relatively cheap/easy fixes, others are complicated and expensive.
Either way, you want to find and fix.
On our 2009, I started getting gas smell only after filling the tank and doing a hard right turn within the first 50 miles. A new gas cap solved my problem.

I hope yours is that easy...
Yes! now that you mention it. The smell is strong after filling the tank. Thanks!
Are you guys filling up on a fast fill setting or the slowest setting on the delivery handle?
How well do the tanks siphon over to the opposite side when filling?
I normally use fast fill until I only need another couple of gallons, then shut if off and do a slow fill for the remainder. I have a pretty good idea of how many gallons it'll take to fill the tank. Going all the way on fast results in gas squirting out when it shuts off, and it gets all over the fender.
I guess it transfers from one to the other fine. I've never had a problem with it.

Each of the little tic marks on the gas gauge is very close to 1 gallon, I can usually predict within 1/2 gal how much mine will take to fill up. I tried topping off just once, and, like everyone says, it just results in slopping gas all over the fender. Let the automatic shutoff do it's job, on low flow, and you'll usually be right on.
Be very careful when filling up and do not spill/overfill. If you still have the smell I would take it to a competent shop.
I had the same smell and the dealer did a smoke test. Found the evap line was leaking right off of the fuel pump. Changed the fuel pump under powertrain warranty and all is good. Hope you are under warranty as this is not a cheap fix....with A6 they have to drop the transmission and cost was $2500.00. Thank goodness it was covered.
