When attempting to start, there is a full gauge sweep, lights and windows will operate strongly, new battery (load tested), but the engine will not start -except for once in every 12 to 20 attempts. When it does start, turns over fine and starts quickly. Before getting a new battery the symptoms were that of an old, weak battery, but never did it not engage the starter at all. Any ideas, or has anyone else experienced this problem? Thanks
Sounds to me like a loose or corroded connection at the battery. I had the exact same problem and it was a loose positive connection at the battery. Evidentially the computer senses the power from the battery, and if there is not enough the starter will not engage.

Make sure you check your connections at the starter. The solenoid might be on the way out. I just replaced my starter the other day. The car would not start it would only click once and then nothing. In my case the cable to the starter was loose, however tightening did not help. I believe that heat from my headers is the culprit in my case. I will use a heat shield around the starter this time. I also replaced my ignition switch since I was in a working mood because I had a lot of starting cycles on it. Everything is working as it should now. The 12-20 attempts leads me to believe it may be you starter. Or a bad connection if your battery is good.
