I'm brand new to this forum, but I'm hoping to find some information / suggestions on the navigation system in my car.
My car is a 2008 with the radio/nav combination, and recently I get an error message telling me to insert a map dvd, even though the dvd is in the drive when i try to use the system. For a little while, if I ejected the dvd and re-inserted it, it would read, but most recently it won't even do that. I've called the dealer, but with a $100+ diagnostic fee, I would like to do some troubleshooting on my own before I pay a tech a bunch to look at it. I thought about trying a newer dvd - maybe mine is just old? A friend suggested running a dvd cleaner in the drive, since maybe the laser is dirty? Has anyone tried anything that has worked?
I'm really hoping that it is an issue with the dvd or laser, and not the whole unit.... (The radio still works fine)
Thanks, I'll give that a shot. Not sure how delicate the inside of that unit is, so I'll just do it carefully, (the last thing i want to do is damage anything esle in there!) I'm probably buying a new dvd anyway, since mine is old enough that many of the roads have changed anyway
Mine is a Vert and the inside of the car is a dusty place if it is driven with the top down often. Computer dust can in the slot of both DVD and CD drive makes a big difference.
When I bought mine (used), the Nav would load up and then give me warning messages, not allow me to enter data, etc. Dealer sent me a new disc and all is good.
Get a can of compressed air and put a few shots in the disc slot. Most likely it is a dirty lens.
Welcome to the forum!
with shooting compressed air liberally in the drive slot and you should also check your DVD for any circular scratches (scratches that follow the DVD grooves) and if your disc is scratch free give it a good cleaning. A scratched disc or a dirty disc will prevent the drive from reading it. The can of compressed air won't hurt a thing and it could possibly clear some dust that may have accumulated and is causing some disc reading errors.

And if the disc is scratched, it can be copied on a computer and then you use the copy. Computer drives are usually better at reading imperfect discs. As was stated above, scratches that follow the grooves are the ones to worry about. Scratches across the grooves are dealt with fairly well by drives.
Thanks everybody, haven't had time to try anything yet, but hopefully over the long weekend I'll be able to try out your ideas. I really appreciate the help.
