Default Check Engine Light

I was driving home tonight and after about 1/4 mile of driving the check engine light came on. My speedometer for RPM and MPH stopped working and showed readings at 0 even though the car was moving at 15-20 mph. I pulled to the side and shut the car off and then turned it back on to find that the light was still on. I ended up driving back home due to me being cautious and thought that there might be a big issue at hand here. My car is a 2013 with 14,700 miles. Just bought it a month ago and have had no issues until now. Can anyone give me any tips on this issue?

Little side note-it has been raining tremendously in my area for the last 3-4 days, one road i took this morning was under 2-4 inches of water. I went through the road only because i had to and slowed down to speeds of 10-15 mph. I don't think this caused any damage to the engine because i drove the rest of the day and everything was fine. Just felt like i had to disclose this info.
Thanks guys

I've had similar indications and the crank sensor was defective, check intothat.

Crank shaft position sensor caused the speedometer to stop working? And the engine still ran with a defective crank shaft position sensor?

Did other displays on the dash work (volts, oil pressure, etc)? There are several hundred possible causes of a CEL. Without more information anything anyone says is just a guess. Your mention of water, however, would lead me toward a wet Engine Control Module (ECM) connector. The ECM is where the digital signal packets for speed (from transmission) and RPM from engine are created and sent over the local bus to the Instrument Panel (IP). The reason I ask about other displays is the IP also gets information from the Body Control Module (BCM) and if those are still working then that at least narrows it down to the signals from the ECM. Having both RPM and speed out also limits it from the sensor direction to the ECM since they are entirely different signals from different sensors having only the ECM in common.

You say you drove the rest of the day and everything was fine. If the issue is gone I would again think wet connector and ignore it until it happened again. But if you want to look, the ECM is on the firewall in the passenger wheel well.

Thank you for the extended reply.

I did not drive the rest of the day however. The issue with the water was very early in the day (9am) and the check engine light came on at 10:30 pm. So i have yet to see if the light still is on. To answer your questions, the speedometer and rpm gauges were the only ones that did not work. Everything else looked good and worked

Well, no one mentioned it so I will. She's still under warranty. Take it to the dealer, and let him fix you up.

Very first think you must do is READ THE CODES....trying to troubleshoot a problem without knowing what trouble codes are being thrown is next to useless. If you don't have an OBD II reader, go to any auto parts store (Advance, Pep Boys, Napa, etc)....they'll read the codes at no cost. Also, warranty should still be valid so you can go to a dealer, but still best to have some knowledge of what the problem might be before you do that.

Oddly enough, the light shut off today after I installed the new exhaust that i had planned on installing all week. don't know if the engine light situation is temporary or what but will wait to see what happens. Thank you all for the replies!

You may want to still read the codes to see if one was recorded. For certain issues, the CEL will reset itself after a given number of starting sequences but the code should be retained.

Some reset immediately but those that set the CEL usually stick around in memory for a while.

That does tend to narrow it to the ECM or wiring but the ECM also does oil pressure as well and if that was still working...

At this point I would read the codes just to make sure but also hope it never happens again. Just like any computer, this car does occasionally just get confused. Not often but occasionally. I recall 2 strange occurances with my car in 50K miles that have never occured again. Good luck.
