Default Gremlins check engine light

Steady burning check engine light is on. Owners manual says the light should go out after several cycles. Had been using Chevron Hi Test but got a Shell $10 free credit gift card and used it for a few gallons of Hi Test. Check engine light came on after adding $10 Shell gas.

My MPG also went down to 15 MPG. Checked gas cap and it is tight. The engine start button stays on after closing and locking doors, also mirror lights stay on. They will go out after 20 min. or so

Should I have an auto parts place check error codes?

What would the wise ones on this forum do?

Yes, take to an auto parts-store and find out what the code actually is. Otherwise, it could be any of a half-dozen or more things.

If you have On Star, you could just have them run them for you.

The reason your mirror lights and engine start button remain lit is because your left knee has bumped into the switch on the dash that turns on the lights. Its the little black button at the lower far left of the dash, about half inch in diameter that sticks out about three quarters of an inch and has a light bulb graphic on it. Push it in once and release and the lights should go out as usual.

As for the CEL, as mentioned above get the code read, it could be a number of things. If your car is running fine odds are it was the gas cap.

Half a dozen? How about over 500 uniquely identified issues and thousands of possible failures.

The user's manual does NOT say all CELs will go out after a few run cycles. It says
The check engine light comes on to indicate that there is a problem and service is required. Malfunctions often will be indicated by the system before any problem is apparent. This may prevent more serious damage to your vehicle.
Notice: If you keep driving your vehicle with this light on, after awhile, your emission controls may not work as well, your fuel economy may not be as good, and your engine may not run as smoothly. This could lead to costly repairs that may not be covered by your warranty.
Sure it is most likely just a leaky gas cap that still has a leak or you haven't gone through enough cold start cycles (I seem to recall it says 20 in the shop manual) but it could also be something serious. Without reading the codes you will never know but a leaky gas cap will not change the MPG so you seem to be living on borrowed time.

Hey psimms,

Have you stopped in at your dealership to see if they can run the code and diagnose the concern for you there? If not, we'd be happy to assist in setting up an appointment if you need one. Let us know if you get things figured out or would like our assistance.

Thanks,

The CEL is a separate issue from the lights staying on too long. That is certainly the bump of the button with your knee. If the CEL was caused by the gas cap, it will take a few start/run cycles for it to clear, even if it is now tightened and fixed...the light will not go off immediately. The Shell gas is not part of this problem. No matter what gas you had put in, it would not cause a CEL. I would suggest driving it a few more times and see if the CEL goes off. If not, then you will need to check and see what code or codes are stored or current in the system to see what is wrong.

For the lights, check post #4 here:

Well, you could call Miss Cleo on the psychic hotline or you could pick up a code reader for about 1/2 the price of the phone call.
