Im changing the top on my vertt from beige to black i got several quotes alot came in very high like +1700. but two guys are giving me good prices the first is an overall convertible top buy for 1330. and the second quoted me 1594 but hes known for his work on vetts and hes been doing it for +40 years. i know that itsa big difference and my wallet is telling me go with the 1330 but this other guy comes highly recommended from several corvette shops in the area.

You really don't want to know.
"an overall convertible top buy for 1330"...what's an "overall convertible top"?
"second quoted me 1594 but he's known for his work on vettes and he's been doing it for +40 years" and "comes highly recommended from several corvette shops"...
And you want to save 264 bucks? Puleeze.
I have considered doing the same but will make it a DIY project. There is a thread that has step by step instructions. You can buy the tops online for around 500.00.
I'd only consider someone with a solid reputation. You can ask the reputable guy if he'll match the lower price, or split the difference, can't hurt. But I wouldn't grind on the guy, just ask. Then once you have your answer, get him to do the work.
ment to say overall convertible top guy as in he works with convertible tops.
and i thought about making it a diy but worried ill get in over my head. im fairly handy but not with cars
i spoke to him and hes holding strong we agreed to 1594 including the tax. which is about 170 over the competitor but what i liked was that he was straight with me and he values his work
Remember that the top itself (the fabric) contains the rear window. The two are made as one unit, so the top is a fairly expensive part to begin with. Then you have the labor to R&R.
It's still about "You get what you pay for." Has been, and always will be. Or like my dear old Dad used to say, "It only cost a little more to go first class."
BTW, I think I saw a black top for sale in the "sale" part of this forum at a very good price. Won't hurt to check.
My c5 was 13 years old when I sold it and the top was still in good shape so Ive never changed one. Would love to see it done. The headliner and all those strings worry me more than the top

From what I remember of the DIY thread, the top was replaced without disturbing the liner. It was done from the top (no pun intended). I agree with you that the liner and those strings are more daunting than the top itself. Also, there have been far more problems with that liner than with the top itself.
Overall, I think the C6 top is well done. It is very quiet on the road, seals well from leaks and it doesn't have the inflation 'bump' in the middle that so many verts tops show when the car is at highway speed. I still see C5s on the highway that have the hump from inflation by the wind.

No brainier.
Spend the extra few bucks and go with the guy with all of that experience. It'll cost you more to straighten out any problems caused by the less experienced guy.

All the above is true from what I've seen over the years. Esp. the part about most troubles--- if there are any, and there are very, very few---are with the inner liner and its connecting straps, not the exterior top. And the top itself is an expensive item.
IMO, You really want someone who's been doing this a lot---and someone you can go back to if there's an issue, a problem or an adjustment needed. And with the claim of doing it for 40 years, that's the expert, and experts treat their job and reputation carefully, or they become a has-been.
