I have to get my windshield replaced and I don't even know where to start! Do you recommend national chains, GM dealers?
I tried posting on the regional board but got ZERO response: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...apolis-mn.html
I had Safelite replace my rear windshield on my CTS (HUGE piece of glass) and had no issues with them. But there's another thread on here where someone had them do work on their Vette windshield and had problems. It's a toss up. But dealerships just call the national chains anyhow, so I'd just go ahead and cut out the middle man and go straight to the chain.

You simply call Safelite and get it replaced. Lifetime guarantee.

Thanks. I agree, would rather keep the car in my possession anyway.

According to the Safelite guy who changed out the windshield on my last C6, there are no aftermarket "factory" windshields. However, the windshields all come from the same factory. When you get your new one, you will notice the GM logo in the corner has been removed. Even if you get it replaced at the dealer, they will contract it out to a vendor who will get the same ones, with the logo removed.
When you call your insurance company they will connect you with a local glass guy. I would also recommend a Safelite dealer. They will ask you questions like, does your car have HUD and does your car have OnStar. They make different windshields for each/both.

Do you know if they use "factory" glass?
I've had a number of windshields replaced here in Charleston, SC due to one main interstate (I-526) which had a section that the pavement was coming apart. They've re-surfaced it now and the windshield problem has been fixed, but I commuted on that road daily for a couple of years and loose rocks broke over a half dozen windshields on my cars. Luckily not my C6, but other nice cars. I found out dealing with Geico that you can specify that you want factory original glass put back in your car and they have to replace it with original glass. I can't say it's the same in every state, but it's this way in South Carolina. My insurance company is Geico and I assume you can make the same request with the other car insurance companies. Geico never said a negative word when I asked for factory original glass.

The jury is still out on the factory glass issue. Some glass compamies say that the insurance co's have to replace the glass with factory stuff....(GM logo). But insurance companies say no they don't. You can get a piece of GM logoed glass from a dealer and then have whomever you chose install it. Most insurance companies won't cover the over cost for the GM glass though. This GM replacement glass issue has never really been resolved......some say the insurance co's have to use it.....some say they don't....help us Mr. Wizard !!!!!
Check with your insurance agent and see if they have any recommended installers they deal with. I can ask my wife if they have any favorite installers at the agency she works at if you like.

You can have original GM parts specified in your insurance policy; then they have to use them for glass and other parts. And a lot of it varies from state to state; I read on here a couple weeks ago that at least one state requires insurance companies to use original glass.

I would also call Safelite, If you are paying this your self and not ins, there are 3 different windshields for your car. no xm- onstar: xm- onstar: and xm-onstar- hud. All three windshields will work for hud. The only difference is the dark colored at the top to hide the xm-onstar receiver. There is a big price difference. Don't let them screw you.
I had one replaced on a C5 I had and then, when it rained there was a large leak which ran down to the carpeting. Went back to them, they reinstalled it and all was well.....................
If insurance is paying for it, then go with their recommended glass installer...that way if anything goes wrong, they have the horsepower to get it resolved. This will likely be Safelite. Dealers almost never do glass...they farm it to someone and then add a profit...no reason to go there.
Insurance (I had Nationwide) will only pay the difference after the deductable. My glass was $545 and I had a $500 deductable, so i didn't bother with insurance. Plus they only accepted Safelite.

That is exactly why I lowered my Comprehensive Deductible to $0. I had a small chip in my other car, about 1 week after I had bought the car brand new, a rock was thrown by a tractor trailer on the interstate and chipped it.
My deductible was $250 and they (State Farm) said they would pay anything over that if I filed a claim, I said screw it and had it fixed myself. The guy found out I did not have insurance and he did not charge me anything.
Ever since I have my Comp Deductible at $0.
I have been worried about this myself, I have the HUD and the DVD/NAV and was thinking that would be expensive, so I have mine at $0 for that reason, it does not cost much more to lower it, now on collision it is a different story.
Side note, no longer with State Farm, don't like their exclusions and the charge double what I pay now.

This is part of the confusion. Never heard that it was a state to state thing. Might be one of those deals where you have to roll around on your insurance agents office floor and throw a temper tantrum and then they will finally get you org. glass.
