The outer ones directs air to the center piece which causes like a force air induction to help with engine cooling. They have nothing to do with high speed down force. They do add more drag also. I have not had them on my 08 for years and my car runs at 192/194 degrees on the interstate.GM realized that they did not do much for cooling on the C6 so they made a change to the C7.Does the change make a different on the C7? I don't know??...............
Mine are all ate up, I think I'm going to pull them when I go to install my splitter. I didn't see them being very functional, figured I'd ask.
In my opinion, if yours are worn out, that means they've been scraping the ground a lot, which means that you would benefit from keeping them as an early warning device.
Otherwise the first sound you hear will be touchdown of the painted nose panel or radiator support frame or whatever gizmo you're planning to install. Ouch.
GM's use of an inexpensive, flexible air dam on most C6s was the correct use of materials for this application. Rigid, expensive cosmetic pieces under the nose make as much sense to me as a screen door on a submarine.

When I did have my on, I would hear my under bumper scrap not the Dam things when I pulled to close to of those cement things in a parking lot....
During the C6 production run 2005-2013, GM eliminated several items to save money and a little weight- the underhood light, center console lock, handgrip for closing the trunk, etc.
They never eliminated the front air dams, and there must be a reason for that. We may not know the exact reason(s), but those pieces would have never made it through the first cost/weight review, if they didn't do something good under some situtations.
Some people remove them and notice no problems, but that's a far thing from saying they serve no purpose.
