Default Time for New Shifter/Cable

As I posted in tech area, when we returned from 1K+ round trip to Hot August Nights and pulled into the garage, I couldn't shift into Park. Got great input and advice in response to my post; however, due to Surgeries, I'm not able to do the DIY to properly fix it, so I took it to a dealership I've been dealing with for years. Just got off the phone with them; they are replacing the shifter and cable, as well as doing an oil/filter change for under $800. Although I hate to fork out money for something I used to be able to do myself, from what I've read on this forum and else where, this seems like a pretty fair price considering the labor involved

If cable linkage bushing cracked and cable popped off which i think is more common than the cable breaking, then it is a much cheaper repair to just replace the bushing. Not sure what fails requiring a new shifter.

But as with many dealer repairs, if the bushings are not designed to be replaced then dealer will quote a new cable.

That is why i like to DIY. 2 hours of my time and $7 bushing assortment from the parts store fixed my shifter.

DIY is always my first thought. Unfortunately, given what I've read, these days this one sounded like it would be outside my capabilities. I had cancer surgery a year ago that has left me with some limitations with my right side (I'm right handed).

I did mine in under two hours.
The cable is 50.00.
The hardest part are all of the screws holding the tunnel plate on.
My cable broke up front where the cable slides into the tube.
I would replace the entire cable before just replacing the ends.
I keep a spare cable in the back of the car at all times.

A dealership with a lift could replace the cable in a lot less time.

The cable was the biggest reason I didn't do it myself. Thought if I took my time I could probably do the 'top end' portion, but needed to replace the cable as well & these days, there's no way

I had mine replaced by a Nappa shop a few months ago, $380.00 including cable.

You can do it by removing the H pipe. The mufflers don't need to come off.
Like I posted above, the worst is the heat shield and it is just tedious.

Replaced mine a week ago in my garage. 1 1/2 hours total start to finish. The only real reason it took that long is the 234,867 bolts in the heat shield.

It is very simple, just tedious. Drop the h-pipe, remove heat shield. If you have small hands like me, you can just reach up around the torque tube. Used a screw driver to pop the cable off of a small bracket near the shifter, removed from the trans and pulled it out. Fish new cable up into location, press onto shifter, snap into bracket, connect to trans. Viola.

Thanks.. new cable on its way...I could of possable got away with , adding new bushing in end of cable but, i pulled up on it to much when it was in all the way (park) and i broke the plastic part of cable completly off.. But tried new bushing after that, and just as i thought.. Cable ( male part) bends and kink's when going from drive (cable is extended) to park ... yuk if i only had not broke that,,, --then bushing would of worked.. Anyway cable is ordered....
