Has anybody had a tint installed on their polycarbonate top? Being follically impaired I'd like to have the 3M Crystalline tint installed so I can use the top longer into the season before I put the painted one on.
Thanks' Ron
Let me add some specificity to my post. GM part # 12499572, AKA transparent Lexan top, blue top, clear top, tinted top and/or polycarbonate top. My assumption was that because I posted my question on the Corvette C6 Forum people would know what I was talking about............
We know what you're talking about and we're pointing out that they're already tinted. There are a lot of things you can do, you could paint it, wrap it or tint it again.
I have both the painted and the Lexan top. I'm just trying to put off switching to the painted one a little longer. I haven't seen tint done on the Lexan top and an wondering if can even be done. Has anyone done this?
Thanks' Ron
Many years ago, one of the members here who does this sort of thing for a living, measured the amount of UV that gets through the "transparent/tinted" top.
I don't recall the exact percentage, but IIRC it was low enough to qualify for "archival storage".
OTOH, a friend with an Atomic Orange C6 showed me we could feel more heat on our hand that was just beneath my transparent top than under his painted one.
I've used the static cling dot matrix for a couple of summer seasons, and removed for the rest of the year.... Blocks at least half the rays.... And you can still get the view..... Several Vette sites sell them for under $30 I think....
Only an issue if you cut the tint to shape on the top itself.
Many window tinters augment manually cutting tint by hand by using a plotter/cutter attached to a PC to cut the tint pieces from EPS templates.
I had the back window done and the rear defogger still works so I'm guessing they were VERY careful with the cutting. Your suggestion sounds like a good idea, thanks' Ron
I use my lexan top all year. havent had the painted one on it aside from when I bought the car. yes it gets kinda warm sitting in the sun while parked in the midwest but thats ok because it has A/C and doesnt take long to cool it down.
