Logically the Corvette is the greatest sports car on earth when you consider the relative alternatives and all the variables that one looks for in a car/sports car including performance, the amazing look, price, prestige, reliability, cost of ownership and even MPG...etc etc. Its simply the best value and the best value is the the logical decision.

As many have so correctly mentioned, the Corvette (in the American context, anyway) kind of thrives in a world of it's own........sports car? muscle car?.........regardless, almost always admired !!
However, "back in the day," (the 60's, that is,) and speaking of straight-line acceleration in particular, "anything Hemi" was a threat - or enemy if you choose that stronger terminology - particularly the Challengers and 'Cuda's, so equipped !! Mustangs with their 289, later 302 "mills" weren't seen as much in the way of challengers at the time.
That's my memory as a teen, later young adult, in those days - growing up in suburban Detroit, no less !!

The late 60's and early 70's were great. Here was the lineup of me and my buddies back then- 67 gto, 69 gto 69 road runner 70 superbee 69 z28 69 442 70 chevelle ss 454 70 charger rt and the big dog of the group 1 Superbird!. And we drove them to school everyday!Man those were some good times.
Got to admit that the late 60's was a great time ,and when the only real Nascar race every took place; being the 1969 Talladega 500. Hence Talladega was built for 250mph speeds and the only time that track has been run at those speeds was its maiden race.
After that, Nascar just become another Iroc series, run with cripple speed cars that have become a joke as well.
As for the last of the true all out racing without Hobbled cars, that was the Can-am series, but that came to end as well (combo of crashes, and the Porsche 917 specifically designed for that series that dominated it in the end).
I was a little too young to get in on the biggest part of the muscle car era. To me, today is the golden age of the muscle car and horsepower.
Our run-of-the-mill Corvettes will outperform most of the cars of the golden age of the muscle car, all the while running many more miles, with way less maintenance. I love the old muscle cars but IF I had one, it would be a resto-mod with a modern drivetrain. I want to drive my cars, not work on them.
Mustangs aren't even in the same league - they are pony cars. They compete with the Camaro and Challenger. I like all of them for different reasons but they aren't any competition for the Vette.
Hey now! You are likely talking about most of the members here. The average age of a Corvette owner, the last I saw, was about 56. It just so happens that is my age right now. So, do I fit your definition of older? .......I won't comment on the fatter part since I'm technically not fat or skinny!
And I am also 56 years old - the proper age for a vette owner, so, no, you do not fit my definition of "older". That's for the guys that are much, much older than us, like maybe 58 . As for "fatter", well watching me get out of my Z06 must be like watching a gazelle give birth to a water buffalo - but I keep telling myself that clumsy maneuver is only because of my 6.2 height, not my middle-age girth
Not enemies, but we always had a good rivalry with the Porsche guys. Did some SCCA racing back in the day and they were as passionate as we were. They never liked it when we called them "twinky cars". Engines were just in the wrong end...if you've ever driven one hard you know about "trailing throttle oversteer", typically a rear-engine trait. Always had the Corvette Corral and the Porsche Corral at Sebring...they sipped wine, we slurped beer.
