I notice that quite often when I first start up and drive somewhere, it takes awhile (a mile or so)for the dash lights and nav screen to "wake up" to give a brighter display than when I first start out.
Just a guess but I bet your headlights are on and everything is dimmer. It takes a little while for the sensor to register you don't need your lights and auto turns them off. Try turning off the headlights when you first start the car and see if that works.
^ Yep. I turn the fog light switch backwards towards me to turn the auto sensing lights off and the dash becomes brighter. I wish that were the default...I don't like the dash gauges to be dim ever.

I keep the light switch in the auto position all the time.

Normal?
Yes, it is normal. Like the OP said, it takes time for the sensor to shut the headlights off.
Yes, it's normal. No worries. It seems to take a bit for the electronics to decide if it's light or dark and to then set the lights accordingly. It makes sense because if it reacted immediately the lights would be going on and off all the time when you passed through a shadow or a bring ray of sunlight.
yep. I park daily in a garage at work and every day the lights come on till about a min (maybe only 30 seconds or so) after I leave the garage. While they are on, the dash is dim. then it lights up nicely once they turn back off.
I stopped that by backing into the garage. with the nose pointed in it turns on the lights. nose pointed out brings the windows of the garage door into play. also sometimes it takes 30 minuets for the car to decide if its light or dark. if you turn auto off it will tell you "headlights suggested". Seems to happen to everyone to some degree. PITA
