Default Automatic Door Locking When Exiting

2011 C6

One FOB provides automatic locking after a few seconds after I close the doors and walk away. Call me lazy, but it works for me.

The other FOB must be pressed. I recall an entry (perhaps many) in the forums providing a step-by-step breakdown as to how to program a FOB to provide automatic locking upon exiting.

I've read the Manual, but fail to find a specific reference. I find several entries in the manual and here, talking about various methods to do certain things with the car as to locking, but my age must be catching up with me because I cannot for the life of me find the step-by-step.

Please provide the link so I can print it out, use and save it for the next time the &^%$*& FOB stops working.

With the car running, and the driver selected on the door, push the lower right button on the dash surround marked options. Run through the options until you get to auto lock .You can then use the reset button to enable or disable (from memory a decade after the last time I set this).

Let me know if my memory is still good .

2011 C6 owner's manual, page 5-56:

Entering the Personal
Options Menu
To enter the personal options menu,
use the following steps:
1. If you have an automatic
transmission vehicle, turn the
vehicle on with the shift lever in
P (Park).
If you have a manual
transmission vehicle, turn the
vehicle on with the parking
brake set.
To avoid excessive drain on the
battery, it is recommended that
the headlamps are turned off.
2. Press the OPTION button and
you will enter the PERSONAL
OPTIONS menu.
The DIC will display the current
driver number (1 or 2) for a
few seconds and then will
display instructions on which
buttons to use for setting the
personalizations. The RESET
button is used to select a
setting for a particular feature.
The OPTION button is used to
move to the next feature.
3. Press the OPTION button
while the instruction screen is
displayed to enter the first
personalization menu item.
4. Once you have cycled through
all of the personal options,
pressing the OPTION button
a final time exits the personal
options menu. In addition,
if no button is pressed within
45 seconds, the DIC will exit the
personal options menu.
Page 5-60:

Passive Door Locking: This
option allows you to select whether
the doors automatically lock during
normal vehicle exit. When the
ignition is turned off and all doors
become closed, the vehicle will
determine how many keyless
access transmitters remain in
the vehicle interior. If at least one
keyless access transmitter has
been removed from the interior
of the vehicle, the doors will lock
after a short delay.
For example, if there are two
keyless access transmitters in
the vehicle and one is removed,
the other will be locked in. The
keyless access transmitter locked
in the vehicle can still be used to
start the vehicle or unlock the doors,
if needed. A person approaching the
outside of the locked vehicle without
an authorized keyless access
transmitter, however, will not be
able to open the door, even with a
transmitter in the vehicle.
You may temporarily disable the
passive door locking feature by
pressing the door unlock switch for
three seconds on an open door.
Passive door locking will then
remain disabled until a door lock
switch is pressed or until the power
mode transitions from the off
power mode.
Press the OPTION button until
PASSIVE DOOR LOCKING appears
on the display, then press the
RESET button to scroll through the
following modes:
. OFF (default)
. SILENT
. HORN
If you choose OFF, this option will
turn off.

I also think it has to be either a FOB 1 or FOB 2 for it to work. If you only have two FOBs then the chances of them being set up that way are good, but if someone else had the car before you and replaced a FOB then possibly your second FOB is actually programmed as the 3rd or 4th and it will not retain options.

The number embossed on the fob is irrelevant. How it was programmed for the car determines whether it's a #1 or #2, or 3/4/etc.

Thanks for the prompt replies, I'll have to check the fobs but after I got the car used I tried to program a 3rd fob and got a message to the effect that 4 fobs already programmed. I'm a little hesitant to de-program the 2 with the risk of not being able to re-program new ones...at least without more knowledge/research.

Your idea of prompt is different than mine, or you’re a victim of the related thread ‘feature’.

D, all the above, and have to remember with cars that have the memory feature, fob1 and fob 2 are programmed independently, including the auto lock feature.

As for auto lock on exit for either fob, best I can tell you, shut that off, so you don't get out of the car with fob still in the car, and it locks itself with fob still in the car.
Hence not hard to push the fob lock button to lock the car, and since the fob has to be in your hand to push the lock button, you don't chance locking your self out of the car.
Note, doors don't really lock in a mechanical sence, it just a function of the BCM, and how the pull pad on the door will work/trigger the latch mech to unlatch the door, if the car does not see a fob isntead.

The other one, is if you don't need it, turn off the seat on exit function if you don't need it, so your using the seat motors a lot less/they will last longer as well.
