Default 2009 proper coolant temp

I am in Phoenix and my coolant temp even now in the winter is around 220 give or take a few degrees is this normal for this engine I have only owned this car for about 5 months. The coolant is right were it should be when cold and I don't have any leaks that I can see.

I live out in Queen Creek. My wife and I just went for a ride today to Apache Junction/Superstition Mtn. area, and my temp gauge stayed right at 200 both on the freeway, and on rural roads. It sounds to me like your temp is normal. It's probably not much different in the summer unless you get stuck in traffic. JMHO

In heavy traffic 220 is normal. Cruising down the highway that's high.

Mine will be around 220 in stop and go traffic, out on the highway it will drop below 200.

On a moderate day, cruising along the interstate, coolant will usually run on the thermostat. Mine shows 192 steady.

As soon as you slow down and get into traffic, it goes up. 220 in traffic, not stop and go, is typical.

If you are getting 220 in stop and go traffic, it is normal At highway speeds 198 would be normal unless high external temperatures. Anything over 230 is overtemp.

The water pump runs of the engine rpm's

Driving habit's come into play when trying to compare coolant temps.

LS3 with a 180 stat, stock engine other than tune, with 4:10 differential.

I see 189-205 in normal weather, be it at 2,000 rpm or in stop and go traffic.

Once nice side effect for the higher rpm, pump works more and timing is not pulled.

A couple bottles of Water Wetter too.

hopefully, this is the last update on the findings of, my initial problem.
what I thought to be a failed lifter ( as did GM, probably based on my suggestion ). turned out to be dropped valve guide.
the shop who did the work had, installed a different set of heads ( other than mine ),, along with the new cam, lifters and springs.
a few weeks after my work, he sent out 'my' heads to get cleaned up for another install. that's when he found the valve guide issue.
so far, I/m ok with the work but, not 100% sure about any future doings with him.

CORRECTION: not valve guide, but valve seat.

At current temps in the Phoenix area I'm running around 195-200 in traffic. In the summer weather I run around 225-235 in stop and go traffic. If you're running 220 in these temps I'd say you might have a problem.
