Think my shift cable broke! In reverse and can't shift to other gears. It's an 06 base vert A6 auto. Help!

If you can get under the car, then you can move the trans shift linkage by hand to the needed gear (what the cable is connected to on the trans).

As for the shifter lever, chances are the shift lever cable grommet popped off the shift lever side post (gromit worn out). You can get a new end gromit for a couple bucks at the auto parts store to solve the problem. If the cable snapped isntead, then a new cable is only around $45 instead.

Got home! Found a real nice mechanic who came out on Sunday and helped get the car in nuetral so it would start and the manually shifted it to drive. He let the jack down and away I went. One good point! It was a real small town and he wouldn't take any pay! Got to love small town America!

Thanks for the on line help! Now how do I fix it? Does the center console have to come out to get to the shifter? If the cable is broken I also well need access to the under side, right.

Default Shifter cable bushing.

If the cable came off from the shifter you'll need to remove the center console most likely the bushing its broke. Here is what happened to mine and the part you can get it in any auto parts store, I got mine at Advance Auto Parts for like $7.49. The package comes with I believe 4 o 5 bushings you need to use the second one before the smaller.

Easier to check linkage at trans first to see if it is broken there. Or ask you mechanic if it was still attached.

If it is, you won't waste time unnecessarily pulling the console. Mine broke at the shifter.

This gets the shifter **** off since it an automatic trans,
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...automatic.html

This gets the center console out,

From there, go to post 6 which will point you at the bushing end cable that the gromit fell apart and needs to be replaced to snap the cable back on the shifter side rod (or if the cable is snapped and you need to replace the entire cable)
https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...t-working.html

Lastlty, when you go to put the cable with gromit back on to the lever post, pull the end side clip off the side of the loop end, and leave it off until you are sure that the both the shifter lever and the trans lever are both in park.

The side clip is what adjusts the cable to the correct lenght and once you are sure that the both the lever and the trans are both in park, then snap the side clip on last (cable set to the correct length).

If you look close, the outer loop section has teeth, the inner section on the cable rod has the slot for the red side clip to lock into, and one the cable is the correct lenght, the side clip will lock the two together in the correct lenght.

Hence the cable should be set close now, but with some use, the cable will stretch a bit, and best to readjust the cable to account for any cable stretch slop to get the shifter indexed to the trans lever correctly.

Is the gromet that needs to be replaced part of the shift cable?
