Default 2011 automatic

Just bought a 2011 c6 convertible, with auto and all stock. My question is 3 times I have mashed the throdle and it redlined and went into safe mode. Is the automatic programmed to shift or do I have to hit the paddle shifters. It has done this when shifted into d mode and s mode

Mash the throttle and you were probably smoking the tires.

^^ Which is a good thing if you have the GY tires on the car. The faster you wear those out and replace with a good tire, the better!

Obviously when you are in sport mode you will need to press the paddle shifter to get in the next gear, in drive mode you shouldn't get to redline unless tires are spinning. If you are getting redline rpm IN DRIVE mode you will need to adjust the tranny computer shift point.

Not necessarily

Sport mode will also shift automatically if you shift into it and don't touch the paddles

It's highly possible that the previous owner has had the tune altered (Dyno or Street tuned or handheld tuner) and the shift points adjusted and they are set too high -

Sounds like a re-adjustment is in order so that you do not bounce off the rev limiter and trigger the "Safe Mode" -

Easiest way to do this is if a friend has HP Tuners and can open your tune and do a compare to a stock file - or have a shop take a look and do the same and then adjust it accordingly!

Thanks,Matt

Agreed, I think someone has the shift points set to high also

Has it ever NOT done this? Does it shift after hitting redline and safe mode? At what speed are you "mashing the throttle"? My 08, and I'm sure all other A6's, shifts into the lowest gear possible at any given speed. Example: At 60mph hit the throttle and the car shifts down into 2nd gear, and then a second or two later upshifts to the next gear. The only time I have hit the limiter, is when using the paddles, because there is delay between when the paddles are pushed and when the transmission actually performs the shift. It's very annoying, but can be adjusted with a transmission tune (from what I have read). Some day I would like to have that done to my car, but in the meantime, I don't use the paddles.

The first time it did this was in s mode, dead stop and I did not hit the paddle as the book said it would shift on It's own. The tires were spinning then redlined and shut down. The second time was In D mode dead stop and tires spun then redlined and shut down. The third time I was at 20-25 in d mode when i stood on the gas it spun hit redline then shut down. I thought the tranny would have shifted each time. I have never had a car that didn't shift before redline even if the tires were spinning. I am new to the corvette world and dont want to hurt my babe

Beat me to it Dave,
NSF

PS Funny how guys say they spin the tires so easily, I sure don't ????
Maybe the GS sizes have something to do with it ??? Or I got a weakling on my hands

Let me give you a lesson in burning expensive rubber

With no work done to your car you might have a hard time spinning those monster meats on the back of that GS so....

Put in drive
Turn off traction control
Make sure car is straight
Press hard on brake pedal
Depress gas pedal till tach reads 1100
Let go of brake and mash the pedal to the floor

If your tires don't go up in smoke...........

My car has Good Year Eagel F1 tires on the rear. It gets squirrely when they spin. When the car redlined and hit safe mode all I could do was let off the gas and after a few seconds I could use the paddle shifter to shift up then continue on.

I am wanting to buy a tuner but not sure which one. What do you guys recommend?

I bought a Diablo Intune

Loaded the 93 octane tune and a canned TCM tune set to Firm . Drove it around like this for a while and was very happy with the performance increase

You can modify your shift points but I would consult with Diablo first so you don't "Brick" your ECM

I then added CAI and Headers , sent Diablo Lew the logs and he sent me back a custom ECM and TCM tunes that I love .

The Custom TCM tune shifts normal when you are not into it but mash the throttle and it will snap your neck when shifting into second . I now do not have the delay that everyone complains about

Everytime I do it , it brings a smile to my face lol

Thanks For the info Dave. I have never had a car that I have messed with and the tuner scares me a bit but from all that I have looked into Diablo looks good. I eventually want to add cai, headers and exhaust and knew I needed a tune for that but sounds like I may need the tuner first to check the shift points.

I agree get someone to check those shift points

Then get the Diablo , no need to be afraid , it loads so fast you will think that it did not do anything but I can assure you it did .......

Then you can get Lew to do a custom tune

Best part about it, you can put it all back to stock anytime

The car should never go into safe mode. If it does there is a problem other than the way you drive. You should get a code that can be checked. A lot of times it is the sensor in the gas pedal or throttle body.
