Whatever is going on here, I strongly suggest you put it in reverse to shut down and then leave it in neutral while parked.
Very likely the only way to diagnose is to replace the various suspect modules until the problem ceases - assuming you can get it to malfunction regularly enough to know if you've cured it when you do.
I have to ask: does the car have a remote starter installed?
Edit: a short Google will yield many hits of this occurring with other cars.

I can't imagine this being even close to a common problem since there are 15 non-recurring posters on here plus the OP which makes 16, and not one has seen, heard or knows of this happening before. But HOX and a few others may be knocking on the issue.

I agreed with Itshakes, put the parking brake on!
Don't leave it in Neutral, however, or you will come back to a dead battery. Leave it in R.
That's a strange one, and dangerous. Good thing you were able to avoid injury. This sounds like more than just a peripheral sensor or seat wiring acting up, more like a major module is toast or lan bus is shorting out. Did they give you any indication when to expect to hear back from the guy checking the computer?
Thank you all for the information. The parking break was on but the car started to move immediately in reverse despite the lack of clutching and the parking break. The car does not have On Star so there was no external signal. The car is being stored by the dealer on a lift and they were prevented from touching it by GM pending their investigation. Now they will work with me to try to figure out what happened--which GM did not do. Glenn, I will pass on your offer to the dealer. HOXXOH, I will share your your thoughts about the PC board. I am not sure whether the download of the car's computer by GM would have revealed this problem. I have the print out if anyone wants to see it, and is able to interpret it. AO-I will pass on to the dealer your recommendations as to people they should check with. Thanks. I am meeting with the service manager at Fisher Chevy on Tuesday to work out a plan to find and fix the problem. 449er, I had11 years with this great car but I cannot take the car back and trade it or sell it unless it is fixed because I cannot risk this happening to someone else. I will let everyone know what Fisher's plan is so that anyone who wants may comment on it. It would be very helpful to Fisher and to me since there is a lot of good expertise and experience on this site.
This is certainly a dangerous situation and I hope they find the problem. My second thought is how the media is pushing the self driving car thing. Anybody want to be on the road with millions of cars and their electronic systems just waiting to fail?
My understanding of the '05 is that you must shut it down in reverse but after it is shut down, you can put it in any gear. I would be putting it in neutral...even after they supposedly get it fixed. This is a situation where it is difficult to prove that they fixed it, proving a negative, so be safe and leave it in neutral.
Not much help from me here. I like Dano's thinking though.
I have never been all on board with the new electronic age especially with the automotive related gizmos.
And yes I can do without a cell and puter if needed. As well as power windows, seats, remote start and all the other bells and whistles in cars for the last 50 yrs.
Since all those problems trace back to the RCDLR, that'd be the first place I'd look. It's not like they haven't gone bad before, but this one sounds extreme.
IIRC, the RCDLR relays the signal to start the car, so if it has an internal short across a trace or a cracked PC board, it could activate stuff without the need for checks and balances. i.e. bypassing door switches and clutch switch.
Might be on to something here, and with all the crappy cold joint soldering problems on too many of the boards in the car over-all, may be a recall on the RCDLM's coming next.
Hence this is not just a break down problem with not being about to drive or start the car and needs to be serviced, but a huge safety factor problem with the car starting and driving it self away instead.
But to point out, if the car is a 2005, then there was a RCDLR update reflash arund 2007/2008 for the car (was based around battery drain with the car not going into sleep mode), and could be part of the problem is the RCDLR was not firmware updated isntead.
Regardless of what the dealership or GM find, if anything, this situation should be reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
I'm not much into the government getting into our lives,,,,,but this issue needs to be reported to see if other similar situations have occurred in the past and reported to them.
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination or the unexplained. It is an area which we call ... The Corvette Twilight Zone
