Default Frame rust

Just bought an 05- love the car. Of course, after a few days im finding her flaws... Noticed some rust today where the side rails meet under the hood. I was reading scraping it off will further the amount of rust in the long run? I was going to scrape it off then paint it

It looks like rock salt in there, I would clean the entire underside of the car then see how bad it is. If you expose fresh metal to the air without painting it rust will form almost immediately.

To all you Desert Rats and Southern Rednecks:

This is why us Northern Rednecks hibernate our Vettes in the winter.

Yep. People think I'm crazy when I'm washing the under belly and engine compartment of my WRX during the winter. This is why.

Your local hardware store should have a product called rust reformer. Use that after removing the loose stuff (wire brush) then repaint with an epoxy primer Eastwood dot com should have all the right stuff

I used a product from Eastwood called "Rust Encapsulator" on a 46 Ford truck frame. It worked well, and has been on the frame for almost 8 years. Comes in brush and aerosol versions. Good stuff, and I'm sure there are others.

If it is not directly exposed to sunlight and UV Rays I have used a product called POR15. It is fantastic.

Eastwoods Rust Encapsulator is good as well.

A-zone used to sell some stuff that would turn rust into black primer. Not sure if they still sell it or not.

have done the whole underside of my 51 IH pickup with POR15. Great stuff.

Just don't get any on you as there is nothing that will remove it. You just have to wait till your skin flakes off and sheds it. Ask me how I know.

When posting this thread, I was hoping I was going to get replies like
"Ah not too bad" or
" mine was the same way "

Ah, what can you do, I guess that's what happens sometimes when you buy an older car.
Hopefully I don't find too much more when I get up in the air

On a more important note, is this something I should have re-welded? Just follow the bead with another one on top? Obviously I'll know more after I remove the rust - hoping it doesnt go any deeper than it appears -but I know people in the business that can take care of that for me

No, cosmetic mostly. Just stop the rust from getting any worse.

The problem with driving in brine slush is it gets EVERYWHERE. Including inside the frame, nooks, crannies, etc.

You should have looked at it closer before buying, although that doesn't help you now.

No i wouldn't go in there with a welder, i would do as the other's have said clean it up maybe get in there with a wire brush on a drill then chemically clean it, and i would just brush paint it this way no overspray gets on any areas you don't want it to. IMO the rust is not nearly bad enough to warrant welding or any other invasive procedures. a good cleaning and paint and you won't have any problems.

I'm definitely disappointed in myself for not noticing this upon initial inspection of the car
I think I was so overwhelmed with Corvette fever and awestruck at how clean the car was .... It was like some Jedi mind trick

That's just going to hide it, not fix it.

It's just surface rust now. Get it off and then protect the area to prevent future rust.

Get under the car with a bright flashlight and inspect every nook and cranny for more rust.

Eastwood has good stuff. I'd start there.

My experience with Por15 was not good. Maybe I did something wrong, but I've had rust come back on parts I used Por-15 on. (this was on a Jeep, so it saw much more abuse than a Corvette)

We drove our C5 through five Chicago winters on the GY winter (not A/S) runflats, no longer available. When we sold it, the frame looked better than OP and the body/paint looked like any other C5 with the same miles and years. So OP's pictures are not encouraging.

On our C6, we park it when the salt first hits the roads and don't drive it until the spring rains melt the salt away. Except, once each winter we cover the shipping slots with duct tape and drive to Florida, remove the tape and wash underneath thoroughly when we get there. I did forget to do the tape job one year.

Recently I bought a tiny video camera and was able to look inside the frame through the shipping slots, found only one small spot of rust. I think rust inside the frame is much harder to deal with, so if OP wants to keep his car for a long time, I'd recommend the interior camera inspection. He might be ok, or not. Here's the link to my other thread, post #4 has the best info.

Clean it up, paint, enjoy the car and don't worry about it.
