Last night while on the freeway. Something broke. I wasn't speeding, my oil changes have been regular and by the dealer, its a 2010 with 53k on it. All stock. There were no warning lights or bells or anything.
It suddenly sounded like something let go and was banging and clipping and rattling against something, like a broken rod or piston ring or who the hell knows...followed of course by a loss of power. It's at the dealer now. They told me this morning its a catastrophic failure, but won't know what till next week but he said its Baaaaaad.
I have the best GM extended warranty they offer (Bought the car last year) So....Is there a common failure or weakness you guys know of. Anyone ever had to have their motor replaced?
So, I guess you're covered by your "warranties." But which one did you buy and was this in addition to the one that came with the car --- if it was a Certified Pre-Owned by GM? CPO I think gives you one year; if you got another one at cost to you, it would take it out further and possibly cover more things.
In any event, it sounds like you'll be covered. Thank goodness!

Bummed?
Warranty flips for a brand new LS3 at no cost to you.
Should be doing a happy dance, my friend.
Pretty rare a LS3 frags, almost always a LS7.
Be very interesting learning WTH failed, hope they find the issue which w/shouldn't be hard.
Really glad you're covered financially, this won't be a cheap fix.
A paid for new engine softens the sting of this happening to begin with a whole bunch, though.
I'm just worried they will find some reason to not pay. I'll know more tomorrow.

The only thing that has plagued the stock LS line of engines is broken valve springs, but as others have said, the LS are pretty reliable.
But, witnessing this issue, I have not seen or heard of internal damage, but a broken valve as a result would not be a stretch.
Less common and rare is failure of the oil pump, but it should come up on the DIC as low oil pressure.
Hopefully you'll have the car back soon with a new engine without any hassle.

Gee, that picture looks really familiar
OP, that's the broken spring from my car (08 LS3). Was just driving along, when it suddenly started running really rough, then stalled. Wouldn't start for q few minutes, and when it did, banging noise like rod knock almost. I was lucky; when the mechanic pulled it apart the broken spring had screwed into itself and held the valve up. No damage to the motor and a cheap repair.

Bingo, it is.
This will be added to my LS engine picture gallery, thanks for sharing.
The springs that have broken in our lab did the same thing like yours did, without internal damage.
