A 305/30 fits well, but you may need a 11" wide wheel.

305's would be about the widest you'd want to go.

You going for looks, or performance/grip, or both?

305's will fit on a stock 10" wheel.

Absolutely.

I was going to go with 305's when I bought my new rear tires, but it would have required me to also change the front tires to maintain the correct aspect ratio. I'd purchased new front tires about a month prior and wasn't about to spend another $500 to replace perfectly good, brand new tires, so I went with 295's instead.
