Default Compass

Just wondering if anyone actually uses the compass. Not just on a Corvette but any car? I would rather see the outside temperature or something else useful. It is just an LED display with a signal feed right?

I know, a lot of questions for a trivial matter. I was driving for three hours today and had an opportunity to look at it several dozen times.

As long as we are on rear view mirrors, does anyone make one that is a video screen wired to a camera out back? Seems it would be a better view.

I check my compass occasionally. I check my outside temp on the climate control screen occasionally too.

Are you talking about the temperature you're setting for the cabin, or are you talking about the display of the outside temperature?

If you're talking about the outside temperature, be aware it won't update immediately if that temperature has gone up.

Page 3-29 of the 2008 owner's manual:

If the outside temperature goes up, the displayed
temperature will not change until:

• The vehicle’s speed is above 12 mph (19 km/h) for
five minutes.

• The vehicle’s speed is above 32 mph (52 km/h) for
two and a half minutes.

These delays prevent false readings. If the temperature
goes down, the outside temperature will be shown
when you start the vehicle. If it has been turned off for
less than three hours, the temperature will be recalled
from the previous vehicle operation.

I'm glad I have it. It helps if I'm somewhere unfamiliar and want to make sure I'm going towards my destination.

A number of years ago, I had problems with the compass giving an incorrect reading. I went through the calibration process, and it would work for a while and then lose the calibration again.

Now I rarely pay attention to it.

Try leaving it alone...don't get ahead of it.

You have both on your Vette. And yes, I glance at the compass when I want to know which direction I'm heading.

I know both are there. And maybe it is generational. I just have never used a compass in a car on the road. Off road in trucks, def. But knowing even number highways are east/west and odd North/South takes away that aspect. Most city streets have it on the sign if the street is long enough for it. I don't think I have ever looked at a compass and thought I am headed east but this road says south.

To be honest, I don't really look at or care what the outside temp is though either. lol When I really need to know I check my phone. Safely stopped of course

I just find it a curious function in newer cars.

But you think that hooking a rear view camera up to display in the rear view mirror is a good idea? Am I missing something here or isn't that a redundancy?

You get a wider field of view with the camera screen as opposed to the mirror image. It's an option in some Cadillacs (and maybe other cars) and I think the main selling feature is that people sitting in the back seat don't block the view as they do with a mirror. Or course, we don't have that issue in a Vette.

I admit to being a gadget lover, and I like accurate data, so the outside temperature is a good thing to have for me. It's quite accurate, plus it tells you what the temperature is where you are, and on the phone the weather station it's showing may be miles away. There can be significant temperature difference over short distances. It can also tell you when the rain you're having may change to freezing rain. The outside temperature is used in the climate control system in the car (which I assume is its primary reason for existence).

The compass is just a gadget for gadget lovers I suppose. Kinda like a tachometer is on a Yugo.

I use my compass when I'm trying to navigate the busy downtown streets here that are all mostly one way. It's easy to get turned around.

Like RocketDawg said; It is a wider field of view than the typical rear view mirror would be. There are no obstacles to block it either. It would not be the same as a back up camera in that it would point back not down and would not have the lines on it to help guide you into that spot.

Personally I can not believe side mirrors have not been reduced to a pillar mounted camera and small screen on either side of the dash yet as well as the rear view mirror.

I can see that. It does make sense. I guess since I program every destination I am unsure about into NAVI, it is just not something I have considered. But in SF there are plenty of ways to get turned around if you are not using it. Knowing what direction you are going and knowing what direction to go though is often a challenge for some.
