No, they are very different cars actually.

GS (Z16) has steel frame vs aluminum on Z06. Same size but different wheels. Available with automatic and/or convertible. Z06 brakes. Slightly different suspension: Z51 springs, Z06 sway bars, Z06 front shocks, Z16 unique rear shocks.

The Z06 and GS/Z51 also have different transmission ratios. The Z06 has taller gearing in every gear except 4th and 5th.

Dry sump oil system only available on coupe with manual transmission. Convertible doesn't get it with either trans.

Z16 (GS) is an evolution of the Z51 package, which used to be known as the Gymkhana package, which is a fancy way of saying Autocross.

The Z16 and Z51 packages were designed for tight technical roads and courses. The Z06 was designed for wide open high speed sweepers. Just look at the trans ratios in the MT.

Or as a convertible. There are some other suspension differences but they are not drastic. The GS MN6 Coupes have a dry sump LS3 and convertibles have a wet sump. If you want the wide body looks without the Z06 performance and price tag then the GS is the way to go. For me the 436 HP from the LS3 is enough. Our 13 GS Convertible is a cruising car. 37,000 miles in 3 years and 4 months.

The easier way to define the GS is to compare it to the base Vette, not the Z06. The primary differences are body panels, brakes, and wheels. The only other difference of note is a dry sump on the Coupe with a M6 trans.

Z06 engine sits farther back and lower in the frame than a GS, magnesium parts (roof and engine cradle), carbon fiber front fenders, early models had less options (weight savings), less insulation (weight savings), different exhaust. Z06 has balsa wood and carbon fiber floors.

So, what rear axle ratio did your 08 Z51 (A6) have?

08 z51 rear axle should be 2.56. Not sure why going to a 2.73 should feel slower. It actually should feel faster as it's a shorter gear.

Part of the Z51 option in '08 included a 2.73 rear gear. That gear was also a stand alone $300 option for the base and F55 suspension cars.

BTW, the rear spring rate on both the GS and Z51 option was 645#, while the base was 657#. Kinda strange huh.

Sorry everybody, I hit enter before really thinking about it thoroughly. Heck it's been so long I may have the memory completely reversed.

Again, apologies.
