Default Compass Calibration

For some reason the compass on my 10' GS was stuck at North, I never had the battery disconnected either. Anyway I just went to a big parking lot and as per the manual put it in calibration mode after changing the Zone to 10 (I live in western NY) drove the car in circles slowly but the compass never showed a new heading, drove circles both right and left.

Turned it off and back on tried several times, now the compass is stuck on South East!!

Any ideas? maybe drive out to a more rural area?

I live in a very developed area. I had to drive in circles once also. Mine works fine. Has to be something else. Fuse maybe? Try an online search.

Do you have a radar detector hooked up with a mirror mount?

I put my radar detector up on a blendmount and the compass gave me fits for a few weeks. I adjusted it a bit and it started working again.

Do that. Mine wasn't working right either until I took a drive out in the desert and it fixed itself.

The recalibration procedure should be listed in your owner's manual.

Yes, that is how I was doing the procedure. When it didn't work, I posted here. Sounds like my radar detector mount may be the problem.

Shouldn't you see if driving around in a rural area fixes it before you start taking things apart?

Many years ago I set my laptop computer on the passenger floor. I assume it was the magnets in the hard drives that "adjusted" what the sensor in the BCM computer just underneath the carpet was seeing and the compass was way off all day. As soon as I removed the laptop the compass returned to normal.

My compass went goofy last year on my return trip to Bowling Green. On my way home, it finally snapped out of it, and has worked fine since. Never did figure out what exactly happened.

Be aware of the state LEO's running around. OSP "LOVE" to ticket people. I might be up Saturday.

Enjoy the drags!

Bookmarking in hopes there's a fix, tho' never had this happen.
Short of replacing mirror, having removed detector, did recal wondering if mirror circuitry simply failed.

Living in a very rural area my cruises just get more rural, I really use & need my compass to navigate. It ever went on the fritz I'd want it fixed.

G/L, a new mirror's probably not cheap.

My car had this problem when it was fairly new. I took it to the dealer, who calibrated the compass under warranty. It lost calibration again. I tried the procedure in the manual, but it didn't work. I finally left it in the calibration mode and drove as normal. The compass suddenly started showing the correct direction. The compass went out of whack again. Just when I thought I would take the car in, I tried the calibration mode again, drove normally and the compass snapped back and hasn't acted up again since.

I can't explain it.
