If just the clutch went out, it can be replaced on the cheap, and in most cases, while the compressor is still on the car so you don't have to drain, then vacuum, then fill the system back up.
If the system leaked and you lost all the freon, then bank that you killed the dryer and will need to be replaced as well.
And lastly, if you over fill the system with freon, it will set the over pressure switch on to turn the system off (so you don't blow a line as the freon heats up and expands).
