First thing I would do is upgrade your restrictive air intake box. There are many "CAI" systems out there, and virtually everyone of them is better than what came with the car.

For every person that says get an aftermarket CAI, there's someone else on here that says none of them really give you a performance enhancement.
You can do just a cat back.. you can just do cat back and mid-pipe.. you can just do headers.. you can just do headers and mid-pipe.. or you can do all three. I just did corsa sports cat back. As I knew eventually I would do headers and mid-pipe as well. cat back is sound only. won't give you anything performance wise.. Car will be louder, but not significantly so. Add headers and noise will come to life much more. So, know what you want cat back wise, and from a noise level so it's not over loud for your needs. I would not suggest removing cats. its probably ~5 HP difference so not enough to put up with potential smell.
Figure headers+mid-pipe+catback+ tune is somewhere around 20-25 HP / TQ gain. CAI - maybe +5-10 more. so, best guess from them is about 40 -- but probably really closer to 30 hp. Sound will be wonderful at WOT though.
I want to add a CAI to my '07 "LS2" and headers+mid-pipe next and will be doing that sometime towards end of year (hopefully). Plenty to research to find the sounds (roughly) that you would like. Just review for drone, as some are know to have more than others. And that could ruin a n otherwise great start of a build.
