Hey folks.
HUD problems. I've been digging through the other threads and haven't quite found this problem yet.
The HUD is on, I can see it on the windshield, but it won't adjust quite high enough. If I look down through the windshield at the mirrors, they are in place and rotating as I push the button. However, when it gets almost to where I need it to be to see the full display on the windshield, it rotates back down slightly while I'm pushing the "up" button. When I push the "down" button with the display in what it recognizes as the full up position, it shifts slightly upward again then starts its downward projection. (If that makes any sense.) So it's still rotating, it just won't quite rotate to the full "seat backs upright and tray tables locked" up position.
I had a friend help me check it the other day - he rotated it up and down over and over again while I watched to see if the mirror was moving - and it finally started working correctly again. However, on my drive home, it went back to the funky-ness again.
Do you reckon the mounts on the mirror are going bad? Or the motor that moves the mirror? Or do you know of anything else I might could try - like the whole unit may be wiggly in its mount or something?
When I was car-shopping I drove a couple with HUD and realized I would turn it off and never use it. I find it an annoying distraction. The dash guages are deep-set and far enough away that from my seating position I can see them without dropping my eyes from the road. So I was actually glad I found a car I liked that didn't have HUD. Seems like it's just one more thing to go bad. But I guess a lot of people like it, that's cool.

So many people feel the need to post their opinion which has nothing to do with the question or problem that the OP posted ......
To the OP , I agree with Ed , sounds like a stripped gear
It sounds like either a gear stripped, or one of the pivot mounts has let go just enough to not hold the mirror up to max height. Either way, you will have to remove to investigate ad fix the issue.
Good luck

This probably won't help, but I had the same problem and did the same fix your friend did twice The last time it stayed. It gets a little loose when I drive over a bump once in awhile but overall seems fine. Try it again nothing to lose.

HUD is great at the track when everything is happening at a faster pace. I find it very useful.
Mirror pivots also break. Below is a video of this repair. Looks like you are going to have to remove it to find the problem. Not a fan of cutting the duct, but seems to be easier than removing the dash. Seems to be a common problem.

Since he already has it, I guess that doesn't help much....
Thinking of the day, that I might have to fix mine. The cutting the duct method seems to be the easiest way to do it. Has anyone used the flexible cable saw that is used by plumbers to cut PVC pipe? Looks like it would be the safest way to cut it.

Thats the only way to cut the duct as far as I am concerned ....makes a nice clean cut almost to clean as you have to work the duct out after it's cut but when you go to put them together they fit like a glove !
remember, don't cut it to close to the mounting point on the dash , you want to be to the left about an inch
