There were four movies actually:
Gumball Rally (1977) - The best one IMO
Cannonball (1977)
Cannonball Run (1981) - Actually had Brock Yates in it
Cannonball Fever (1989)

PROS:
-Hanging out with other car enthusiasts.
-Nice roads along northern US
-Track day
CONS:
-Driving my car 2300 miles from Houston to Detroit and back from Denver for a 1700 miles race.
-Taking 4 days for the 450 mile first leg. How many cities do you need to close down to blaze through there? (I know there is a track day)
-Finale is 2 days in Cancun with a DJ party...what am i 20? And $6500 for the pleasure of doing it?
Give me 3 weeks in a nice sports car in the South of France, Italy and Swiss alps with some change left over.
Don't see the appeal to those with $25K in discretionary income to get to Detroit for average 200 mile per day race ending in a DJ party in Cancun. Someone explain it to me!
If you want an actual race, go to the Silver State Classic Challenge, which officially has the record for the fastest road race, and the highest speed recorded on a public highway. Yes, it is too far from you to be feasible, but it really is a race, with different classes, and is all-out, non-stop, start to finish. Entry fees for the five classes range from $560 to $900. Lots of Vettes, Porsches, etc.
The race is far shorter than any leg of the CBR...total is 90 miles, with the best average speed so far being 219.6430

Look at the "records"link for some very cool information.
