Doesn't Richard Rollins (sp) still hold the record? Him and Dennis from Gas Monkey Garage show on discovery channel? It's real ! Can't imagine how much it would cost for one of those tickets if you get caught, and possibly lose your car?
PROS:
-Hanging out with other car enthusiasts.
-Nice roads along northern US
-Track day
CONS:
-Driving my car 2300 miles from Houston to Detroit and back from Denver for a 1700 miles race.
-Taking 4 days for the 450 mile first leg. How many cities do you need to close down to blaze through there? (I know there is a track day)
-Finale is 2 days in Cancun with a DJ party...what am i 20? And $6500 for the pleasure of doing it?
Give me 3 weeks in a nice sports car in the South of France, Italy and Swiss alps with some change left over.
Don't see the appeal to those with $25K in discretionary income to get to Detroit for average 200 mile per day race ending in a DJ party in Cancun. Someone explain it to me!

Its more of a car enthusiast bucket list item... It's not for everyone...
Me and a friend did our own from Newwerk, DE to Fairfield, CA when we moved back here a few years ago. 3o26 miles in 47:17. 05 Volvo S60 T5. Wife did not want to drive back so our friend did it with me as it would take her through 3 states she had never been to. We did have to venture off a bit to hit Sturgis, MI and stop for dinner with my folks in Muscatine, IA but we seriously wasted no time elsewhere. Awesome trip and my fourth coast to coast.
Wow! 950 miles in 11 hours. That statement caught my eye because I do long distance endurance motorcycling, and it usually takes me 15-17 hours to go 1000 miles. And that's on a bike with an aux fuel cell designed to go 400 miles between fuel stops, and not stopping for anything else. I have practiced for years to get my fuel stops under 10 minutes from freeway exit to entry.
At your 28 mpg, figuring in 3 pit-stop style gas stops at 10 minutes each, and not stopping for anything else... 950/10.5= an overall average of 90.5 MPH average. For 950 miles! On eastern (slower) public roads, through cities, traffic and the usual road construction. Pretty amazing, especially if you took I-95. I couldn't even do that on my bike.
