Default Cannot shift INTO Park

I have been having the occasional can't get out of Park, but after a few tries it works. But yesterday came home after attending Vets to Vettes, pulled into my driveway to do a 3 point turn to back into the garage. Tried shifting from Drive to Reverse, wouldn't go, finally got in in Reverse to back in garage, would NOT shift into PARK, I tried quite a few times. Finally had to shut off in Neutral, now the accessories won't shut down, had to disconnect the battery. Connected the battery back, tried to start, will not start out of Park. I am not mechanically inclined but work with quite a few guys that are, I would like to know a little about what it could be? Thank you in advance for your replies. 2007 Base Vert

You must not visit this forum very often because there have been numerous threads on this just in the recent weeks, as I've only been a member here a few months and have seen many.

The problem is likely with a grommet that attaches to the shift cable, or it is the shift pawl mechanism. Both appear to be fixable by the DIY mechanic.

Here is a link to the pawl fix.

And here's one on the cable grommet.

There are many others you can find using those two search terms.

Good Luck!

Thanks, for your reply. By the way I do visit this forum at least 2-3 times a day. Neither one of those seem to be the problem I have. I can't shift INTO PARK. I did do a search and couldn't find the same problem. I'm not trying to waste other members time, just searching for an answer. I have received many good answers in the past, that's all I'm looking for, not wise cracks.

If your problem does not fit either of the descriptions in the above posted fix threads then you will need to take the console apart and see what's going on under there. Either that or have it towed to a repair shop.

Sorry if my comments came across as "wise cracks" as that was not my intention. I simply looked at your member date and figured you have not been visiting much because there are multiple threads on similar issues, frequently.

You said yourself "I have been having the occasional can't get out of Park". I mean what part of that statement did I mis-understand? You don't think this symptom is related?

If the shifter is hard to get out of Park after starting, caused by the microswitch not making contact enough to fully release the locking pawl, then the locking pawl will not allow the shifter to get back into Park position.
You need to remove the console, and release the locking pawl using a small screwdriver, as per the attached pic.
Your right micro-switch (pic) is starting to fail, or not making enough contact, so your issue will get to the point where you can't shift out of Park after starting the car. Either replace the micro-switch or tie back the Locking Pawl and no more worries about either scenario.

Good luck

Thank you for explaining yourself, I wasn't sure if they were related but after reading LV2TOUR it sounds like they are. Like I said I am not mechanically inclined. I have read every post about lock IN park, but didn't think locked OUT OF park was the same. Thank you, no hard feelings, now I got to get this damn thing fixed. I'll do a search on how to remove the console.

If it is the grommet, be very careful not to flex the cable housing. The part you can see and will be working on is hard plastic.....non flexible. It will break very easily.

Does yours shift into/out of gears and N? If so it is probably the locking prawl.

Yes, Park seems to be the only problem

How did you fix it? I’m in the same exact situation right now, car in neutral and now it won’t start cuz it’s not in park but I can’t shift to park.

your shifter cable has snapped. Common problem with C6 automatics.

I had this very same problem when my 2005 Corvette car was under the 3 year factory warranty. At first the dealership replaced some cartridge underneath car. The problem returned and the second time they replaced the whole shifter assembly. No problems ever since.

Same thing happened to my 08 vert last week. It wouldn't come out of park and that has progressively been getting worse. So I pushed the shifter forward and got the brake again in a few different configuration of steps and that didn't work either. So I turned off the car and tried again, still wouldn't come out of park for a second and then all of the sudden it came out of park but it wouldn't let me squeeze in the trigger style release button, but like I said it still came out of park and it felt like it skipped over the top of park and reverse and it went into neutral and then drive. That freaked me out a little but it engaged both drive and neutral but now it wont let me go down into Sport and it won't let me go up into reverse or park. So I got it home and put on the E brake and disconnected the negative terminal and she's sitting in the garage waiting for me to figure out how to go about fixing her.

Not sure this will help, but you might hold the ACCY down till it is fully into Accy. Then with foot on brake pedal and shift into Neutral and start engine. This helps when shifter can't be shifted out of park
