Sub Thump downfire box
So I started doing research on what my options were and I did not like the idea of paying for JL‘s rear corner mount sub that sits in the cargo box opposite of the battery box. One option I did run across was Sub Thumps twin down firing 10 box that allowed for full size 10’s as opposed to the shallow 10.
Well I took a gamble and decided to purchase the downfiring box and boy was I happy. Not only is the sub thump speaker box quality but the 2-10s sound amazing. There is easily five times the bass coming out of these Rockford Fosgate punch 10’s and I caught both of them on sale for $75 each. One JLshallow mount sub is close to the $300 mark. That is where I sit all in for my new box and speakers.
The last thing I had to figure out was where I was going to mount the amp (8”x9”x2.5”). I initially thought I was going to have enough room to attach it to the side of the box and it fit between the rear speaker and the box but it was too tight of a squeeze and was going to completely block out sound from that passenger rear speaker. So I started playing around with ideas of where to mount the amp and I came up with simply putting it low and center on the back of the box. I am Running a Kenwood Exelon 800/5 amp that is powering all doors and both subs in the car.
I originally had the amp mounted behind the passenger seat but was finding that it was getting very hot back there and I didn’t like to look over and see a gap behind the seat and the rear wall. Most people on here will say they mount the amp behind the seat and that is good for them but I prefer for the amp not to get hot at all and nor do I want to risk burning it up or the back of my seat for that matter.
So once I bolted the amp to the back of the box it just did not look clean enough for my taste so I started playing around with ideas of how I could enclose the amp while still allowing it to breathe. What I did was simply make a frame out of two by three-quarter inch number one Pine and covered it with material I bought from a craft store.
Then I started brainstorming how I was going to keep the cover on the amp and did not like the idea of having to screw anything down in case I needed to make any adjustments on the fly. So what I did was build the frame roughly 1/8 of an inch smaller than the depth of the amp and that would allow the frame to squeeze over the amp and hold onto it with just that resistance. It worked out perfectly.
So how is the fitment of everything with the Targa top installed you may ask? Everything fits perfectly. Nothing touches, bumps or rubs and I actually have an inch or so left between the frame and the Targa top when it is stored back there.
I think the project turned out fantastic. Not to mention two full-size 10 inch Rockford Fosgate‘s slam when I want them to and the fact of them being right behind the driver and passenger allows me to keep the base level way down and not put such a load on the amplifier.
What do you guys think?

I use this Alpine 10in sub box... This single 10in sub and the Alpine box that it comes in is truly amazing.... Simplistic design.... VERY DIFFICULT TO FIND due to popularity..
Fits right behind the drivers seat area.. doesn't take up too much space
I power the sub with a PPI 2400 400W 2ch amp bridged and 2 Fray Capacitor Say what you want about old school amps.. but PPI was one of the best back in the 90's and it's TRUE POWER!!

Also, I agree with you about not having enough room behind the seat for the amp. In the C6 space is kind of tight back there and I didn't feel comfortable putting my amp back there either.
If you do exactly what I did with my system you won’t be disappointed. I love to pull up next to soccer moms at the red lighted and crank it. Hell my wife does too. Haha. I get a nasty out ok but hell. You only live once. “Mercia”
Thanks man. Ill post up in here when Im done. Waiting on the cool weather here in Central Florida.
